Sun Devils Limit Scoring Opportunities for Mountaineers

App State Struggles in Final OOC Game

Article By: NCSUholmey

TEMPE, AZ - In a hard-fought matchup at Sun Devil Stadium, the Appalachian State Mountaineers came up short against the Arizona State Sun Devils, falling 21-7. The Mountaineers, who struggled to find their footing early on, couldn't overcome Arizona State's early lead despite a late surge in the fourth quarter.

Arizona State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with quarterback Sam Leavitt connecting with Troy Omeire for a 24-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter. The Mountaineers’ defense, which had been solid throughout the season, showed flashes of resilience but couldn't stop the Sun Devils' momentum. The Mountaineers found themselves down 7-0 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Sun Devils struck again. This time, it was running back Cam Skattebo who powered his way into the end zone on a 1-yard run, capping off a methodical drive that ate up the clock and further extended Arizona State's lead. The Mountaineers, unable to generate much on offense, went into halftime trailing 14-0.

The third quarter saw both defenses tighten up, with neither team able to put points on the board. Appalachian State's defense, led by standout performances from Myles Farmer and Brendan Harrington, kept the Sun Devils at bay. Farmer finished with seven tackles, and Harrington added six, including one for a loss. Despite their efforts, the Mountaineers’ offense couldn't capitalize, as quarterback Joey Aguilar struggled against a tough Arizona State defense.

As the fourth quarter began, the Sun Devils delivered what seemed to be the final blow. Leavitt connected with Jordyn Tyson on a deep 60-yard touchdown pass, putting Arizona State up 21-0 with just under five minutes remaining. The Mountaineers, however, refused to go down without a fight. Aguilar led a quick drive down the field, finding wide receiver Christian Horn for a 12-yard touchdown pass with just under three minutes left on the clock. Horn's touchdown, coupled with Michael Hughes' extra point, finally put the Mountaineers on the board.

Unfortunately, it was too little, too late for Appalachian State. The Mountaineers had one final opportunity to stop the Sun Devils and get the ball back but came up empty. Aguilar, who finished the game with 187 passing yards, 13 completions on 21 attempts, and two interceptions, faced constant pressure from Arizona State's defense, making it difficult for him to find a rhythm.

On the ground, Kanye Roberts led the Mountaineers with 120 rushing yards on 19 carries, but the rest of the offense struggled to find consistency. Eli Wilson was a bright spot in the receiving corps, with three receptions for 67 yards, but the Mountaineers' offense, as a whole, was outpaced by the Sun Devils.

Despite the loss, the Mountaineers showed heart and determination, especially in the second half. They outgained Arizona State in total offense, 298 yards to 281, and had a nearly even time of possession. The defense, despite the three Arizona State touchdowns, held strong, with key contributions from Thomas Davis, who had five tackles and one for a loss, and Nate Johnson, who added half a sack.

Appalachian State will look to bounce back from this tough loss as they have back to back conference road games up next. The team will need to regroup and address the issues that plagued them in this game, particularly in the passing game and on special teams, where a missed field goal early in the game loomed large. Despite the setback, the Mountaineers remain a resilient squad, and with the heart they showed in the fourth quarter, there’s hope for a strong finish to the season.

Devils Rise Above Mountaineers

Arizona State secured a hard-fought 21-7 victory over Appalachian State in a game defined by defensive grit and key offensive conversions. The Sun Devils’ balanced attack and opportunistic defense proved to be the difference-makers in a contest where both teams were evenly matched in total yards—Arizona State with 298 and Appalachian State with 281.

Appalachian State showed flashes of promise, gaining 187 yards through the air and adding another 94 on the ground. However, their efforts were undermined by two costly interceptions, both of which stifled potential scoring drives. Arizona State’s defense, while not recording any sacks, was able to generate key turnovers that shifted momentum in favor of the Sun Devils.

Arizona State’s offense managed to find the end zone three times, with two of those touchdowns coming in the red zone. Quarterback efficiency was the highlight for Arizona State, as they threw for 232 yards, complementing a modest rushing attack that posted 66 yards. The Sun Devils made the most of their opportunities, converting on 4 of 7 third-down attempts.

Both teams played a disciplined game with zero penalties, but Arizona State’s ability to capitalize on Appalachian State’s mistakes and maintain possession proved crucial. The Mountaineers managed one touchdown but struggled to sustain drives, converting just 4 of 8 third-down opportunities and 1 of 2 fourth-down attempts.

In a game where defenses largely controlled the tempo, Arizona State’s ability to protect the football and execute in critical situations allowed them to come out on top. With the win, the Sun Devils continue to build momentum as they navigate their season.
