New Orleans, LA – July 29, 2024

In a stunning display of athleticism and leadership, Vanderbilt quarterback Nate Johnson guided the Commodores to a decisive 45-28 victory over the Tulane Green Wave on Saturday night. The away game, held at Yulman Stadium, was marked by Johnson's exceptional performance both in the air and on the ground, solidifying his status as a rising star in college football.

First Half Dominance

From the start of the second quarter, Johnson showcased his prowess, leading Vanderbilt to a strong start. He connected with wide receiver Jake Mitchell on a 35-yard touchdown pass, setting the tone for the evening. Tulane responded with a touchdown of their own, but Johnson remained unfazed, orchestrating a series of impressive plays that culminated in a 10-yard rushing touchdown by running back Marcus Brooks.

Throughout the first half, Johnson's precision passing and smart decision-making were on full display. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, including a spectacular 50-yard bomb to wide receiver Aaron Bell. By half, Vanderbilt held a slight 17-14 lead.
Second Half Heroics

Defensively, Vanderbilt's secondary, led by safety Elijah Thompson, made crucial stops to stifle Tulane's momentum. A pivotal interception by Thompson early in the fourth quarter gave the Commodores excellent field position, which Johnson converted into another touchdown with a 20-yard strike to tight end Sam Reynolds.

With the score at 42-21, Vanderbilt's defense continued to hold strong, allowing Tulane just one more touchdown. Kicker Liam Hayes sealed the victory with a 40-yard field goal, bringing the final score to 45-28.

Post-Game Reflections

Nate Johnson finished the game with 325 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, and 75 rushing yards with two rushing touchdowns. His performance earned him accolades from teammates, coaches, and fans alike.

"Johnson was incredible tonight," said Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea. "He showed poise under pressure, made smart decisions, and executed our game plan flawlessly. This win is a testament to his hard work and dedication."

Johnson, always humble, credited his teammates for the victory. "This was a team effort," he said. "The offensive line gave me great protection, the receivers made big plays, and the defense came up with key stops when we needed them. I'm just proud to be a part of this team."

Looking Ahead

With this victory, Vanderbilt improves to 3-1 on the season and gains valuable momentum heading into their SEC schedule. The Commodores will face a tough challenge next week against the Georgia Bulldogs, but with Johnson at the helm, they are optimistic about their chances.

As for Tulane, the Green Wave will look to regroup and bounce back in their next game against the Houston Cougars. Despite the loss, Tulane head coach Willie Fritz remained positive. "We fought hard tonight, but Vanderbilt was the better team. We'll learn from this and come back stronger."

The night belonged to Nate Johnson and the Vanderbilt Commodores, who demonstrated that they are a force to be reckoned with this season.

Vandy scored on 3 straight drives building the lead to 24. Vandy offense was throwing it around like it was backyard football and Tulane just stood there and watched. In the 4th Tulane woke up but it was a bit to late for the wave. They lost 45-28

Coach Doc had this to say, "We suck we couldn't do anything in the second half and we need to be better. We have 3 games to get our head put back on our shoulders and get ready for AAC play. IF we cant do that its going to be a long year.
