Atkins breaks free to return a punt for a TD in the 1st quarter

USF pulls away in defensive battle

Article By: Old Ky Shark

In a game in which USF was outgained offensively, an opportunistic defense and the heroics of WR Sean Atkins saved the day. Atkins returned a 1st quarter punt 49 yards in the 1st quarter for a TD, giving USF a 10-0 lead after scoring a FG on the opening possesion. This score would hold until late in the 2nd quarter the teams would trade blows defensively. Then Atkins would make a big play on offense, catching a deep TD pass right before the 2 minute warning for a 17-0 lead. That would be the score going into halftime.
In the 3rd quarter, the Bulls defense would wreck havoc getting a pick 6 three plays after Bulls QB Brown had thrown his own interception, making the score 24-0. Then a fumble stopped the next WKU drive, but USF was unable to take advantage by extending the lead.
In the 4th Western Kentucky would get on the board, but the USF defense would kill any comeback hopes with 2 more interceptions.
Post game, Coach Shark applauded the defensive effort while lamenting the lack of offensive execution...."Coach Memory is a good coach and we got lucky with the ball bouncing our way a couple times. We've got to perform better offensively, as we can't rely on our defense to bail us out,"
USF will head to Central Michigan Week 2.

Hilltopper Offense Sputters in Opener

Article By: Wasted Memory

After working all off season to make sure a solid run game was in place for the Hilltoppers, the USF Bulls showed how important having a good line was. "They were just every where, plugging every lane, harassing our QB and RB in the backfield. Forced us into a position we didn't want to be in and we paid the price by rushing things and making bad....really bad decisions," commented Coach Memory.

Offensively the USF Bulls didn't need to do much as it was their defense and special teams that sealed the deal against the WKU Offense. The Bulls were able to return a punt for a TD as well as two pick 6's.

"We'll hit the practice field, try to clean this up and get ready for the next game. Seasons not over, we can't hang our heads just yet."
