Arizona Falls to Rival Arizona State

Article By: razorback44

Coming into the game, Arizona knew that Arizona State was led by one of the top defensive minds in the league. They had a game plan that they felt would give them an edge but they truly did not understand how great the coach on the other sideline was schematically until they stepped on the field. Arizona quickly learned there is a reason why coach VTrunNGun has two NDL Cup Championship to his name.

Arizona State used not one, but two interceptions returned for touchdowns to put the Wildcats away 28-21 in this back-and-forth battle between bitter in-state rivals. Most important for the Sun Devils was a 98 yard interception return for what could have eventually been the score that shifted the game in favor of Arizona. On 3rd and 2, Arizona decided to test fate and throw the ball in to the end zone. However, a swarming Arizona State defense immediately sniffed out the play and shut the door on any chance Arizona had to win. It was the story of the game as that was their second of three interceptions and second returned for a touchdown.

Even with all that action, Arizona still had a chance to tie it up and force OT after getting a stop of Arizona State with under two minutes to play. However, Arizona QB Noah Fifita was thoroughly rattled by that point in the game and threw his last interception on a deep pass down the sideline to wrap things up for Arizona State and send them back to Tempe with the big win.

Sun Devils Run This Desert

In a thrilling “Duel In The Desert,” Arizona State edged out Arizona with a 28-21 win, sealed by a dramatic game-ending interception.

Arizona State’s offensive performance was highlighted by their passing game, which generated 171 yards compared to Arizona’s 226. Despite Arizona State’s lower total offensive yardage of 201 compared to Arizona’s 277, the Sun Devils made critical plays when it mattered most. The key to their success was their ability to capitalize on Arizona’s mistakes, particularly with their defensive plays.

Arizona State’s defense was instrumental in their victory, intercepting three passes while only committing one turnover. This defensive prowess not only disrupted Arizona’s offensive rhythm but also provided crucial momentum shifts throughout the game. The Sun Devils also showcased their red-zone efficiency, converting one of their red-zone opportunities into a touchdown, while Arizona struggled to find success in the red zone, with two touchdowns but no field goals.

In the special teams department, Arizona State made the most of their kick returns, amassing 85 yards, which gave them advantageous field position. Arizona, on the other hand, did not manage to register any significant returns.

Both teams were flawless on third downs, with each converting 4-of-6 attempts. Arizona State also made the most of their fourth-down opportunity, going 1-of-1, while Arizona was unable to capitalize on their lone fourth-down attempt.

Arizona State’s time of possession of 12:24 compared to Arizona’s 15:36 indicates a close contest, with the Sun Devils managing to hold the ball just enough to keep their offense on the field and control the game’s tempo.

The game reached its climax with Arizona State securing the win through a decisive game-ending interception, which allowed them to close out the rivalry game on a high note.

Overall, Arizona State’s ability to exploit turnovers, combined with their effective red-zone performance, secured them a hard-fought victory in this storied rivalry. As both teams reflect on the game, Arizona State will look to build on this success, while Arizona will aim to address their areas for improvement moving forward.

With the win wraps up their regular season 9-3 (7-2 in conference play). It's safe to say the Sun Devils exceeded pre-season expectations for a program projected to win only two games. Next up for the Devils is a chance to take home a Big XII Championship as they are slated to take on Kansas & Coach Jiggy.

Coach VT was asked about his future with the program in a post game interview. "I couldn't be more grateful for the opportunity to coach here. I am not shy about my quality bar when it comes to taking on a program. This program has a storied history with fresh jerseys and they delivered this season. We looked good all damn year. We are undefeated in my eyes...That said, running it back here is always a possibility. The AD and I have a call later this week to discuss the future. They know...as great as we've been...we could look better...I guess we'll just have to wait and see."
