In a wild one in Orlando, the Arizona Wildcats withstood a late storm from the Knights to hold on for an improbable 28-20 victory over UCF. The Knights were the favorite going into this one as they looked to maintain a foot in the conference title race but Arizona was able to maintain a consistent enough pace on offense to hold off UCF late once they started clicking.
The Knights jumped out initially to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter after an opening drive field goal and converting a first Arizona pass interception into another 7 points. It looked like it was going to be another long day for the Wildcats. However, Noah Fifita settled in after that ill-timed attempt and went 16-21 the rest of the day and was able to methodically work the Cats down the field multiple times.
28 points proved to be just enough to get Arizona the win. The Cats were lead behind a game of the season performance from Senior RB Quali Conley who rushed for 94 yards and had another 71 yards receiving. It was by far and away his best performance of the year and something Arizona hopes the can build on in their quest for a bowl game.
UCF dropped yet another home game as they just couldn't quite get the timely stops they needed.
"It was frustrating" said coach RB. We had the defense in the right spots at the right time but guys just weren't making plays. Guys running to the LOS to hit the running back and then just letting him run by, its tough. You coach the kids to be in the right spots and they just don't make the play.
Arizona took it to the Knights in the second half, just methodically running the football and passing cleanly.
