Trojans Continue Conference Slide

Article By: AUChase89

Troy, AL (AP)

The Troy Trojans returned home to play Coastal Carolina in a cross divisional conference battle and were unable to come away with the victory. After opening 2-0 in conference play the Trojans have dropped two straight one possession games and find themselves on the outside looking in as their Conference Championship aspirations continue to dwindle.

This game started out on a positive note as the Trojans forced an early stop and then went on a 90+ yard, 17 play march to put 7 on the board in the 1st Q. After the opening possession the defense was unable to put up much resistance leaving them very little room for error and those errors were ultimately what doomed them as they lost the turnover battle -3.

QB Goose Crowder turned the ball over (3) times with (2) interceptions and a very costly fumble in the 2nd quarter that put the Trojans behind the eight ball for the entire game. They put together several positive offensive drives but could not get any help from the defense to validate the effort.

Coach AUChase told us “The players get the blame for the mistakes but it’s usually deeper than that. I didn’t call the best game in the 4th quarter and put Goose in a position to struggle. We did not understand what we needed to be doing in the current situation and we had assistant coaches whispering about our strategy when we scored. You can’t get distracted or take what you’re doing for granted. A few plays later Goose threw the interception, and we didn’t have enough time to put anything together after that. The disheartening thing is we knew they were running the ball late and couldn’t get enough push or effort to get a stop. They also converted 5/6 on third down which means two things to me. One: we didn’t get enough early down stops. They were moving the ball easily and Two: when presented with chances to get off the field we failed miserably. There’s going to be some internal reflection this week and maybe even some staff mix up.”

Coastal Carolina made their fans sweat for the entirety of their most recent game against the Troy Trojans but did just enough to come out with a victory in a difficult road battle. Coach FiredUpChip was asked for comments after the game and provided the following: "It truly was an amazing game and showed why this conference is the best in the country. We may not have teams ranked in the top 25, but every game is exciting and deserves some eyes on it. I need to give credit to Braydon Bennett and our offensive line because they really were the Jimmies and Joes that we needed today to overcome a team with great X's and O's. When we can produce a ground game like that, it makes it a lot easier on Ethan [Vasko] and the passing attack. The defense also came away with three clutch turnovers to allow us to continue with our methodical game plan."

I believe I speak for all of us in Conway when I say that it has been quite the surprise to see that this football team is the Teal Deal. There truly are no chickens in this flock of chanticleers. I guess you could say they have been the proverbial early bird because they have definitely been getting the worms of victory. Okay that's enough cliches for one article, I'll see myself out.
