Jacksonville State had a respectable showing on both sides of the ball in the first half.
Despite some big plays given up defensively the offense controlled the ball and QB Zion Turner made some big plays when needed and after a second field goal from kicker Garrison Rippa the Gamecocks went into half time trailing by just a point at 14-13.
The second half was not a similar story however. Liberty would control the second half in a similar fashion to how Jacksonville State controlled pace in the first half with long drives being capped off with touchdowns in addition to another big play to take a commanding 35-13 lead in the fourth quarter.
A late score from Jacksonville State would make the game seem a little closer but the Gamecocks fall to 2-6 on the year as pressure mounts to get victories with just four games remaining.
The Gamecocks came out with high energy, showcasing their balanced offensive attack. Quarterback [Zion Turner] connected with Michael Pettway, with the only score of the 1st quarter, on a 10-yd pass late in the 1st quarter. Both teams traded blows entering the second quarter. Kaidon Salter finds Reese Smith for a quick strike down field for a 60-yd TD Pass and to even the score at 7. Jacksonville State finds a late score when Garrison Rippa hits a 34-yd FG with a minute left before the half. Liberty looked to close out the half on a 9-yd TD run by Billy Lucas to go up 14-10. The 1st half was not over yet, Jacksonville State had less then 30 seconds before half and found a few big plays to set them up with a 29-yd Field Goal before time expired.
Second Half:
Going into the second half of the game, Liberty looked to take over and they did just that. Late into the 3rd quarter Quinton Cooley finds the endzone from 4 yards out to increase their lead to 8. The Flames defense showed up and forced a stop and gave the ball back to their offense. The Flames were hot in the air, when Salter found his Tight End, Bentley Hanshaw, for a 68-yd TD. going into the 4th quarter it looked like the game was out of reach. The Jacksonville State offense looked to be stuck in mud and couldn't get anything going. Liberty closes the game out on a 1-yd run by Kaidon Salter to secure a victory over the Gamecocks.
Final Score: Jacksonville State 21, Liberty 35
