the Arizona Wildcats outlasted the West Virginia Mountaineers with a narrow 29-24 victory. The game was a rollercoaster of emotions, marked by dynamic offensive plays and crucial defensive stands.
Game Summary
From the outset, the match was a high-octane affair. Arizona, led by quarterback Noah Fifita, put on a display of offensive firepower. Fifita threw for 346 yards and two touchdowns, showcasing a precision passing game that kept West Virginia on their heels. His connection with receivers like Tetairoa McMillan and Montana Lemonious-Craig was particularly effective, providing crucial gains and scoring opportunities.
Turning Points
A key moment in the game came when Arizona's defense stepped up late in the fourth quarter, with crucial stops that prevented West Virginia from gaining momentum. Arizona's defensive efforts, led by Justin Flowe and Treydan Stukes, played a significant role in securing the win. Stukes' interception and Flowe's tackles were instrumental in thwarting West Virginia's late-game drives.
Offensive Highlights
Arizona’s offense, spearheaded by Fifita, showcased a balanced attack. Rayshon Luke’s impressive 55-yard run for a touchdown and the efficient play of Quali Conley in the ground game provided a balanced offensive threat. Meanwhile, McMillan’s 88 yards and Lemonious-Craig’s touchdown reception highlighted the Wildcats' aerial success.
Defensive Standouts
Arizona’s defense managed to keep West Virginia's potent offense in check during crucial moments. Flowe’s tackling and Stukes’ interception were pivotal in stifling West Virginia’s scoring attempts. West Virginia’s defense, although outgained in total yardage, made key stops that kept the game within reach.
No one expected it at kickoff but Arizona surprised the Big 12 and national scene with an upset win over West Virigina. The Mountaineers were one of the preseason favorites to win the Big 12 and have lived up to the hype all season long.
It looked like it was going to be a long day for the Wildcats after they fell behind initially 7-0 but Noah Fifita settled in during the 2nd quarter and had one of the best quarters that Arizona has seen all season. Behind 65 and 58 yards passes to his WRs and a 55 yard run by Reymello Murphy, the Wildcats were able to stake a 19-7 halftime lead.
It felt like West Virigina was going to blow the top off the game at any minute due to their big play ability on both sides of the ball but the Mountaineers just couldn't quite hold on to the ball enough on either side to hit the big momentum play they needed. Arizona only got 10 more points in the second half but it proved enough to hold on and gain the biggest victory of their short history in the Big 12.
Kicking woes continued to plague Arizona as they missed two XPs and a Field Goal in this one. Luckily, they were able to hold on but the kicking issues continue to pile on and will eventually be a difference maker as the season goes on. It's something they plan to continue to hit hard in practice to get on track and stop missing these needed points in such a competitive league.
