Article By: This one was an epic ACC battle. Both teams came in to run the ball and control the clock. Each offense struck early with 1st qtr TDs. SMU would add another in the second and get a big stop only to throw a big INT before the half. The Mustang defense played well all day in a bend but don't break fashion. The defense survived 2 attempts near the endzone and held Duke to a FG to only be down three with a little over 2 minutes left to play. A huge conversion got the Mustangs to the 41 yard line with 16 seconds to go. Preston Stone with the throw of the day hit Hudson on stride in the back of the endzone for the late lead and victory. "All good teams have to win some close games", said Coach Steamrollr22 after the game. "Thats a great team and a great coach we just played. Despite Duke's defense holding firm with a bend-but-don’t-break mentality, forcing SMU to settle for a field goal and maintaining a slim three-point lead with just over two minutes remaining, the Blue Devils couldn’t close out the game.
SMU made a late surge, reaching Duke's 41-yard line with only 16 seconds left on the clock. Preston Stone delivered a devastating blow with a perfectly executed pass to Hudson in the end zone, snatching victory from Duke's grasp.
Coach Steamrollr22 acknowledged the challenge posed by Duke but seemed relieved to escape with a win: "All good teams have to win some close games. We faced a great team and a great coach today. We're lucky to get out of Raleigh with a win, but we'll take it."
It’s a hard pill to swallow for Duke fans, who watched their team come so close to securing a crucial victory. The Blue Devils played a solid game, but in the end, a single play defined the outcome. Despite the disappointing result, we wish SMU well for the rest of their season.
