Cincy fell today to a high powered ASU passing attack. The game was close the whole time, with Cincy's running game leading the way and ASUs high powered passing attack leading them. Key interceptions helped spell the end, and even the very late safety to set up a potential miracle comeback wasn't enough as the Sun Devils prevail in the Big 12 game.
Arizona State escaped with a 31-23 win over Cincinnati in a tightly contested game, thanks to efficient red-zone offense and two critical interceptions. Despite being outgained in total offense—376 yards to Arizona State’s 330—the Sun Devils made key plays on both sides of the ball to hold off a persistent Bearcats team.
Cincinnati dominated on the ground, rushing for 167 yards and earning 24 first downs, but their efforts were undone by two costly interceptions that stalled drives. The Bearcats’ balanced attack included 209 passing yards, but they struggled to convert key opportunities into points, managing three touchdowns but falling short of a comeback.
Arizona State, meanwhile, leaned on its passing game, throwing for 290 yards while the run game was stifled, posting only 40 rushing yards. Despite this, the Sun Devils made the most of their red-zone trips, scoring three touchdowns and adding a field goal in critical moments.
Special teams played a role in the field position battle, with Arizona State gaining 67 yards on kick returns compared to Cincinnati’s 46. Both teams played a disciplined game, committing just one penalty each, though Cincinnati’s 15 penalty yards proved more costly.
Though Cincinnati controlled the time of possession (16:23 to Arizona State’s 11:37), Arizona State’s opportunistic defense and sharp red-zone play were the deciding factors. The Sun Devils’ two interceptions were crucial in preserving their lead, and Cincinnati’s inability to capitalize on third downs (going 3-of-7) kept them from closing the gap.
In the end, Arizona State’s ability to finish drives and force turnovers allowed them to pull out the 31-23 victory, extending their winning streak and maintaining momentum as they look ahead to their next matchup.
