What a game! Especially if minimal defense is your thing. There was scoring, and more scoring, with a few timely turnovers sprinkled throughout, especially in the closing moments as New Mexico was in the process of running the clock out to secure a much needed victory. But the football gods had other plans this evening, as New Mexico's QB fumbled on scramble and Utah St. pounced on the ball, giving them one last shot at a miraculous victory.
Transfer QB Spencer Petras showed his calmness and demeanor as he picked his places and worked his team into striking distance with under 15 seconds remaining. With ball the just on New Mexico's side of the 50, Petras sent his receivers out, 2 flanked to the left, and 3 flanked to the right. As he made his progressions looking for an outside target to get the ball to quickly in the hopes of getting out of bounds and kicking a field goal, down the middle of the field was a wide open Colby Bowman. Bowman blew past safety help bringing in the game clinching touchdown.
New Mexico took possession after the kickoff and gashed Utah St's defense setting them up with 1 second on the clock and prime position for a shot at the endzone. Utah St. went against conventional thinking in this situation and brought pressure. Hitting the QB just before he could get the ball in the air. The Aggies snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.
In the postgame presser, Utah St HC Stephen Garvin was asked by the media about the use of a banned formation, "Shotgun Wide Stack". Garvin was quick to offer apologies, and let reporters know that as soon as he was made aware of the issue in-game he immediately communicated with New Mexico's HC to apologize and make sure he knew it was not intentional. Coach Garvin emphasized that this will be addressed this week in practice and should no longer be an issue for his Aggies moving forward.
