UTEP came and fired on all cylinders winning in all major categories like passing and rushing yards and total offense. The FIU defense had no answer for the UTEP offense as they gave a 70 points !!!! Player of game has to go Jevon Jackson as he had 300 all purpose yards both 100 plus in receiving and rushing.FIU was in this game early but with back to back stops the UTEP offense never looked back. After those costly turnovers they had no answer for UTEP and there High power offense. Now this game puts UTEP on a 2 game winning streak but the struggles for FIU continue but they look to get back on track next week.
The Panthers season has been an up and down rollercoaster this season. We've seen bright spots from the defense at times and plenty of bright spots from the offense. After a shoot out resulted in a loss against Liberty the week before, the offense comes out hot again but the defense was nonexistent resulting in another disappointing loss.
FIU's Haden Carlson and Kejon Owens get off to a hot start in the first quarter and help take a 21-14 lead. The second quarter was a completely different story when UTEP's offense and defense made play after play, outscoring the Panthers 28-7 to take a 42-28 lead into the half. Both offenses struggle to start the second half with each only getting in the endzone once.
UTEP scores to start the 4th to increase the lead to 21. FIU strikes back in 21 seconds to cut the lead back to 14 followed up by an unsuccessful onside kick attempt. With a 14 point lead UTEP decides to keep airing the ball out and FIU's star corner, Masses, takes advantage and takes an interception back 64 yards for a touchdown to cut UTEP's lead to 7. UTEP answers back and then forces QB Carlson to fumble on FIU's next possession, leading to another touchdown to get the lead back to 21 and eventually winning the game 70-49.
This game was definitely closer than the score reflects but between costly turnovers and the defense only showing up a couple of times, FIU just couldn't get out of their own way to pull this one out. After 3 straight away losses the Panthers are looking forward to a couple of home games before they head into their last bye week of the year. Coach Shiesty and the Panthers look to bounce back against conference foes Sam Houston State and New Mexico State.
