In a game that will go down in the annals of Western Kentucky University history as "That Time We Finally Won," the Hilltoppers achieved their first victory of the season by defeating Sam Houston State 31-10. After six games of what could generously be called "character-building," WKU finally figured out how to score points and keep the other team from scoring more.
For the past six weeks, WKU had been collecting losses like they were stamps at a post office. But this time, they showed up with a game plan that made their previous attempts look like practice runs. It was as if they’d finally solved the Rubik’s Cube of football, and their opponents were stuck playing Twister.
The rust factor is real. After a long weekend in Florida (and, bigger picture: after 18 years since having human opponents), Coach Carman returned to Huntsville hopeful the break would help things to click.
It didn't. Leon got a tackle for loss, so the Bearkats had that going for them.
Late in the game, this kinda summed things up: Unable to get the pass going, and kind of resolved to a loss, the Bearkats ran the ball, and the crowd was disappointed in the call and booed.
Rumors are swirling about Coach Carman's future with the team, given their 7 win goal, and the pass game being a bit of a mystery.
