Jags Hold on late to claim victory in Battle for the Belt rivalry game! South Alabama showed their fans a great time as they fought their way to the win. The Jags capitalized off of 2 fumble recoveries on speed option plays and 2 interceptions from star safety Jaden Voisin. Jags remain undefeated in conference play as they begin to set their sights on a SunBelt championship appearance down the road.
The Troy Trojans traveled to South Alabama for the Annual “Battle for the Belt” rivalry game and came away with their first conference loss of the season. Coach AUChase was visibly frustrated throughout the game as the mistakes and inefficient running game ultimately doomed the team.
One of the team’s strengths this year has been the running game but today the team only averaged 2.5 yards per rush on 21 rushing attempts and a miserable 52 yards. The Trojans still outgained the Jaguars but the increased effort to throw the ball and mix in option runs to create a spark led to the turnovers that ultimately sealed their fate and pretended a comeback from being possible. The Trojans scored late but were unable to recover the onside kick and South Alabama locked up the win.
After the game Coach AUChase told us “Goose got hurt early in the game. It had an impact on his ability to throw the ball accurately but a lot of those passes were just not understanding the route or personnel on the field. It would be nice to be 3-0 in conference right now but we have to pick ourselves up and put it on the line again. We had two quarters of scoreless football tonight and that’s not how you win games in this league or any league. The loss is bad enough but taking it in division puts us down hill so we are going to have to climb. It’s best to take it one game and one snap at a time because looking ahead gets you beat. We travel to Texas A&M later this week to play in the Country’s toughest road environment. I hope the guys don’t have a hangover.”
