In their MAC home opener, the Falcons of BGSU were looking to assert their dominance on the Huskies of NIU. Unfortunately for fans in attendance, it was quite a lackluster first half for BGSU.
NIU came out slicing and dicing in their Run n Shoot offense in the first quarter, putting up 21 quick points. And more surprisingly than anything BGSU only mustered to score on 1 of 4 drives in the quarter as drops, and a very unfortunate PICK 6 off a dropped deflection had the Falcons reeling.
After a timeout early in the 2nd with NIU driving again up 21-7, it was Larry yates making the play of the game as he lurked the dump pass to the RB over the middle and took it for 6 the other way. This was where the tide turned on the next drive again it was a pick 6, this time by ALL MAC CB Jordan Oladokun, his first of 4 interceptions and 3 tds on the day. BGSU slugged to a 24-21 lead at the break.
Star RB Terion Stewart was actually benched at halftime after his third drop came on the first play of the second half, and was passed by Freshman PaSean Wimberly who starting to see reps out of new formations. PaSean did not disappoint racking up over 100 yards on 9 carries and more importantly did not drop his only pass catching opportunity.
The defense continued to clamp down and only gave up 7 points after the disaster of a first quarter as the Falcons win 59-28.
The NIU Huskies came out to a quick start, but after a key timeout from Bowling Green, the game turned out quite differently. NIU's coach didn't take the air out of the ball despite throwing 7 interceptions. The Falcon defense defended their endzone effectively with NIU only converted 28% of red zone attempts.
The Husky's coach looks forward to seeing the Falcons next year in DeKalb.
