Malik Sherrod rushed for 187 yards and two touchdowns, and Dylan Lynch buried a last-second field goal to end both halves as Fresno State came from behind to win 34-31 at New Mexico.
The Lobos jumped out to a 17-7 lead in the second quarter, as Devon Dampier was tearing apart the Fresno secondary. But they came up with a key interception just before halftime, allowing Lynch to split the uprights with a 42-yd field goal to tie the game up at the intermission.
Fresno got a huge play of their own, with Raylen Sharpe taking a short throw and somehow breaking it for a 70-yd touchdown. While they traded touchdowns from then on, Fresno would never trail again.
After a fourth-and-goal conversion for New Mexico tied things up at 31 all, Fresno State would turn to their run game and march down the field. They ate up the final 3:31 with a 14-play drive as Sherrod and Elijah Gilliam, aided by a crucial face-mask penalty, would reach the two before kicking the game-winning FG with one second left.
"Malik showed up big time today," Coach JasonUK said after the victory. "He took one 66 yards to the house on our second play, and broke quite a few tackles to keep drives alive."
JasonUk also pointed out the stellar play of defensive star Korey Foreman, as the former USC defender registered 1.5 sacks and wreaked havoc in the New Mexico backfield. "Korey was causing all kinds of problems and allowed us to drop more bodies into coverage. It's the reason we were able to slow down their offense later in the first half, and get back into the game."
Mikey Keene rebounded after a horrific performance against Ohio State. He completed 15 of 21 passes for 235 yards and a score, with only one interception. He also scored from two yards out on the ground late in the second quarter with a tough run.
Fresno State is now back at .500 on the season, and will travel to UNLV before their bye week.
