Illinois football played great offense and timely defense to defeat Nebraska 49-28 in the Big 10 opener for both teams.
The Illini got off to a hot start, scoring on their first three possessions, to take a 21-0 lead. The Cornhuskers battled back to cut into the lead, making the score 28-14 at the half.
The teams traded TDs in the 3rd quarter before the Illini were able to pull away in the 4th quarter.
Sophomore Kaden Feagin rushed for 116 yards on 20 carries and scored a rushing and receiving touchdown. Sophomore Aidan Laughery rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns on just three carries. The second TD came on an electrifying 66 yard run to put the game away for Illinois.
Nebraska faced a challenging Illinois team that exhibited an unorthodox power run game, complete with surprises that kept the NU Blackshirts on the defensive throughout the match. Nebraska's offense struggled, converting only 1 of 5 third downs and committing a fumble that essentially clinched the victory for Illinois. The initial 21-point deficit proved insurmountable. Although Nebraska rallied to narrow the gap to seven points in the third quarter, subsequent big plays allowed, a critical fumble, and continued failures on third down attempts led to their downfall.
Next up will be Nebraska first road test vs Purdue
