In an intense showdown between the WKU Hilltoppers and the MTSU Blue Raiders, the game swung decisively in favor of MTSU with a final score that reflected their superiority in both offensive efficiency and defensive prowess.
MTSU outgained WKU in total offense, racking up 374 yards compared to WKU's 307. The Blue Raiders' success was primarily driven by their effective rushing attack, which amassed 175 yards, significantly outpacing WKU's 84 yards on the ground. In the air, MTSU also had the upper hand with 199 passing yards, whereas WKU managed 223.
The Blue Raiders demonstrated a commanding presence on the field, securing 24 first downs in contrast to WKU's 12. Despite both teams struggling on third downs, each going 2-for-7, MTSU capitalized on their red zone opportunities with two touchdowns. WKU, however, could not find the end zone during their limited red zone chances.
Defensively, both teams were evenly matched with no sacks registered. MTSU's defense was slightly more effective at forcing turnovers, with WKU committing two interceptions compared to MTSU’s single pick. This edge in turnovers played a crucial role in MTSU's victory.
In terms of special teams, MTSU’s punt returns contributed 40 yards, a notable difference from WKU's lack of returns. Both teams were penalty-free, highlighting disciplined performances.
MTSU's ability to control the game’s tempo was reflected in their time of possession, holding the ball for 15 minutes and 26 seconds compared to WKU's 12 minutes and 34 seconds. This control, combined with their effective red zone execution, ultimately led to their win.
Overall, MTSU’s balanced offensive approach and strong defensive showing were the keys to their success in this competitive clash against WKU.
Murfreesboro, TN (AP) - In a defensive battle between two offensive minded teams, the MTSU Blue Raiders had the final punch late, winning the game 21-14 in front of a sold out crowd at Blue Raider stadium.
Both teams were very efficient between red-zones, however, both red zone offenses would stall 2 times each throughout the contest coming away with zero points. WKU missed a chip shot FG in the 2nd quarter, and also threw a pick in the end-zone one drive as well, on a 4th and inches play call. MTSU had a missed FG as well and their final drive of the half end with a booing crowd when they decided to try and score instead of taking an easy 3 points. "That was is all on me, terrible mistake," Coach Dietz stated in his halftime interview.
Both teams traded punts back and forth in the first half while trying to find some kind of identity on offense.
"We went into the locker room at the half, and I just came to coach and said, let me carry the ball coming out of the gates in the second half, and I think we can wear them down," said player of the game Frank Peasant after the contest. "He let me get going in the 3rd quarter and we started to gash them on some inside and outside running"
Peasant would come through with his promise in the second half and the game overall, ending the contest with 24 carries and 175 yards and 2 TD runs. He also lead his team in receiving with 6 receptions and 84 yards with one spectacular catch coming on a 3rd and long in the 4th quarter.
In the middle of the third quarter, the MTSU defense, who has been abysmal this season, made the play of the game, jumping an underneath crossing route and housing the interception. "That was the game right there, the fans took over, and the defense fed off the home crowd. What a great win for the school today," coach Dietz said in his press game conference.
Peasant put the game away in the 4th quarter with an 8 yard blast play to give the Raiders a 21-7 lead late in the 4th. "One game at a time, once team at a time. We have Maryland next on the road, tough place to play, much larger school and home crowd than us. We have to settle in early and hopefully steal a win in College Park."
