Final Score: Liberty Flames 37, UTEP Miners 31
First Half:
Liberty started the game with a bang, quickly establishing their offensive dominance. Quinton Cooley, who has been a standout performer this season, scored on the opening drive 2 yards out to put Liberty up 7. The Flames' rushing offense and effective passing game left UTEP’s defense struggling to keep up.
However, UTEP showed resilience. Utep tied the game up at the end of the first quarter with a 2-yard TD by Jevon Jackson. It was all Liberty in the second Quarter when Cooley took off for a 17-yard TD mid-way through the quarter. then liberty looked to end the half on a 40yd FG to go up 17-7. But, Utep had other ideas, with only 12 seconds remaining in the half, Utep flies down the field and delivers a 33yd TD pass to Trey Goodman to go into the half only down 3.
Second Half:
The Miners adjusted their defensive strategy and managed to contain Liberty’s offense for a majority of the third quarter. UTEP’s own quarterback found rhythm, connecting on a series of crucial passes only to come away with a field goal towards the end of the quarter, bringing the score to 17-17.
UTEP, undeterred, continued to battle and managed to score another touchdown, on a Jevon Jackson 13yd TD run to go up 24-17.
The Miners' defense stepped up at key moments, making crucial stops to give the ball back to their offense.
However, Liberty’s depth and offensive firepower proved too much for UTEP. The Flames scored another touchdown in the final quarter, bringing the score to 24-24. UTEP had a few late opportunities but couldn't capitalize as Liberty's defense held firm. Cooley breaks away late in the 4th quarter on a 68yd TD run to put the Flames up 32-24 with a minute left. With Utep needing a score late to force OT, they looked at 4th and 10 from midfield and found another hole in liberty defense on a 53yd TD pass to Trey Goodman with 3 seconds left.
Overtime:
with the game tied at 31, getting ball first and having the momentum on their side, Utep looks to start off strong. on the first play on offense Skyler Locklear throws an interception to give Liberty the ball and end the game. With no surprise Cooley and the offense rushes down the field and scores on a 14yd TD run to escape with the win in overtime.
