WVU Takes Down Pitt Panthers

Article By: shel311

In the annual "Backward Brawl," the West Virginia Mountaineers secured a 31-21 victory over the Pittsburgh Panthers, thanks to a balanced and efficient performance on both sides of the ball.

Offensive Standouts:
West Virginia's offense was led by quarterback Garrett Greene, who completed 19 of 29 passes for 300 yards and two touchdowns, though he also threw two interceptions. Greene's connection with wide receiver Treylan Davis proved crucial, as Davis racked up 92 yards on four receptions, including a 43-yard touchdown. Hudson Clement also played a significant role, hauling in six catches for 79 yards and a touchdown.

On the ground, the Mountaineers were paced by running back Jahiem White, who carried the ball 22 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns, including a long run of 34 yards. White's versatility was on display as he also contributed in the passing game with a 7-yard reception.

Dominant Defense:
The Mountaineers' defense was relentless, recording five sacks and forcing four turnovers, including two interceptions by defensive backs Aubrey Burks and TJ Crandall. The defensive front was anchored by Ty French, who led the team with two sacks, while Caden Biser and Edward Vesterinen each added a sack of their own.

West Virginia's defense held Pittsburgh to just 47 rushing yards, stifling their ground game and putting pressure on their passing attack. Despite Pittsburgh's 343 passing yards, the Mountaineers' defense was able to bend without breaking, keeping the Panthers out of the end zone in the final quarter.

Special Teams and Conversions:
Special teams were a mixed bag for the Mountaineers. Kicker Oliver Straw hit 4 of 4 extra points but went 1 for 2 on field goal attempts, converting from 30 yards out. In the return game, Keyshawn Robinson contributed with 41 kick return yards and 5 punt return yards, providing decent field position throughout the game.

West Virginia's red zone efficiency was the difference-maker, as they converted all four of their trips into touchdowns. On the flip side, Pittsburgh struggled mightily in the red zone, failing to score on any of their opportunities.

Game Summary:
The game began as a tight contest, with both teams trading touchdowns in the first quarter. However, the Mountaineers pulled ahead in the second quarter, outscoring the Panthers 17-7, a lead they would not relinquish. West Virginia's ability to control the clock and dictate the pace of the game was evident as they maintained their lead despite Pittsburgh's attempts to mount a comeback.

In the end, the Mountaineers' balanced attack, opportunistic defense, and efficient red zone performance propelled them to a well-deserved victory in the "Backward Brawl," leaving the Panthers to rue their missed opportunities and turnovers.

The Annual Backyard Brawl!

This rivalry is one of the oldest in college football, coming in as the 14th oldest to exist!
The first meeting between these teams was way back on October 26, 1895!

2022 was the first time these schools met since 2011 and that game went to Pitt 38-31.
2023, WVU won 17-6.

2024, This game turned out better than their BEEFY CUP game results, however, WVU (powered by Shel), again, proved to be too much for the Pitt Panthers as WVU wins 31-21.

We tip our caps to the Mountaineers as they won this year, but we will come back stronger and be ready in 2025 to redeem ourselves!
Good game to Shel and his Mountaineers and good luck the rest of the way!
