Sun Devils Hold On After Late Surge by Wildcats
The Territorial Cup was up for grabs in Tucson as the Arizona State Sun Devils took on the Arizona Wildcats.
Arizona State received the ball to start the game and took the early lead when Kelly found Coyle from 10 yards out for a touchdown. Arizona answered back when their long drive tied the game when Denker connected with Morrison from 5 yards out. Arizona State took the lead back on Grice's 5 yard touchdown. Arizona's next drive would last just three plays when Denker was picked off and Arizona State looked to take advantage. The Sun Devils needed just three plays to convert the turnover when Kelly connected with Coyle again, this time from 15 yards out. Arizona answered with a long drive that ended when Smith kicked a 31 yard field goal to cut the Arizona State lead to 21-10. The Sun Devils used all of the fifty one seconds remaining in the half to drive down the field and put their lead back to 14 when Garoutte connected on a 25 yard field goal. Arizona State went into the half up 24-10.
Arizona had the ball to start the second half and was able to move the ball before turning the ball over on downs inside Arizona State territory. Arizona State would put together another long drive that resulted in three when Garoutte connected from 19 yards out to increase the lead. Arizona would be forced to punt on their next drive and, up 27-10, Arizona State looked to move the ball and clock in the fourth quarter. Arizona was not ready to wave the white flag, however, and would force a Sun Devil three and out. The Wildcats' offense then stormed down the field before scoring on Carey's 1 yard touchdown run. The two teams lined up for an onside kick, with 2:32 to go in the game, and the Wildcats were able to recover and were on the offense again. This drive also resulted in a touchdown, and Denker's 18 yard touchdown pass to Neal made it 27-24 Arizona State. Arizona decided to kick the ball off and let the defense make a stop. But, Arizona State was able to run the clock out when Grice rushed for a first down on the first play to hold off the Wildcats.
