2 Big Returns help lead to Win
USC wanted to get off to a quick start and they would do just that. In the 1st quarter they would put up 21 points on the scoreboard. It would all start with the opening kickoff as Marqise Lee would take it 95 yards but would be tackled at the 6 yard line. Max Wittek would find Lee though from 6 yards out for a 7-0 lead. USC's defense would be the next ones to get in on the action as on Colorado's first play the safety, Shaw would jump in front of a slant. USC would then go 5 plays and cap the drive with a 3 yard run by Silas Redd. Colorado would then be forced into a 3 and out and on the punt, Marqise Lee would take it 81 yards for the touchdown and a 21-0, 1st quarter advantage. Both teams would be unable to do anything on their next possessions and Colorado would have the ball to start the 2nd quarter. They would hit on their first big play of the day as they would connect on a 91 yard TD pass to cut the lead to 21-7. USC would be unable to answer and would have to send the ball back to Colorado. The Trojan defense would step up this time and get the ball right back to the offense with 2:00 remaining before half. USC would only need 5 plays as they would hit on a 50 yard pass to Lee. Redd would cap off the drive with a 4 yard rushing TD and a 28-7 halftime advantage. "That first quarter was big for us," said Coach Dealer, "Lee getting those 2 big returns and the D getting that pick really helped make it easy for our offense."
In the 2nd half Colorado would strike on their very first possession to cut the lead to 28-14, but they would be unable to do anything after that. USC would answer on a 43 yard rush by Redd and then would use a Dion Bailey pick 6 for the rest of their scoring, giving USC the 41-14 win. "We played a great game," said Dealer, "now we need to keep this up and hope ASU can get a loss in there so we can sneak into the Pac-12 title game."
