Sun Devils Use Big Second Half to Win 31-13
The Arizona State Sun Devils welcomed in the Washington State Cougars and looked to notch another conference win.
Washington State would receive the ball to start the game but, after reaching midfield, Halliday would throw an interception. Arizona State would take advantage of the turnover by driving down the field and scoring on Kelly's 10 yard touchdown pass to Agweune. The Cougars answered right back, two plays later, on a 58 yard Halliday to Mayle touchdown pass. On the Sun Devils' next drive they would even the turnover battle by fumbling and the Cougars recovered. But, two plays later, Halliday would throw his second interception to give the ball right back to Arizona State. The Cougars' defense would force a three and out and the Sun Devils punted the ball. The Cougars were able to move the ball before their drive stalled and they got points on Furney's 43 yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead. Arizona State tried to tie or take the lead before the half but with little time remaining Kelly's late heave to the endzone was intercepted.
Arizona State would get the ball to start the second half and put together a long drive that resulted in a Kelly to Strong 12 yard touchdown pass. Down four, Washington State looked to regain the lead but would be forced to punt. The Sun Devils then increased their lead, on the next play, when Kelly found Strong, again, this time from 41 yards out. Washington State was able to get a 35 yard field goal from Furney, on their next drive to close the gap to 8. Arizona State punted the ball on their next drive and Washington State was in position to tie the game. Four plays later, Halliday would be intercepted again and the Sun Devils turned the turnover into points on a Grice 6 yard touchdown run. With 1:54 remaining, Washington State needed a quick score, but three plays later Halliday would throw his fourth interception. The Sun Devils looked to run out the clock but the Cougars would stop them and force a Garoutte 49 yard field goal. Washington State tried to get a final score but time would run out and Arizona State would win 31-13.
