Wildcats lose heartbreaker in triple OT
Huskers score with :06 left to send game to OT
EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern looked to be picking up its first victory of the season in a big way, but 15th-ranked Nebraska scored with :06 to play to send the game to overtime before eventually winning on a two-point conversion in triple overtime.
On the opening drive of the game, Northwestern's J. Budzien just missed a 54-yard field goal. After a punt from Nebraska, Northwestern put the first points on the scoreboard.
On second down, K. Colter found C. Jones for a 42-yard gain. Two plays later, Colter threw a nine-yard pass to M. Szott for a touchdown with 1:18 to play in the first quarter.
Northwestern took a 10-0 lead with 4:34 to play in the first half, as Budzien connected on a 47-yard field goal. The Cornhuskers scored their first points with :05 left in the half, as S. Lindsay hit a 23-yard field goal, giving Northwestern a 10-3 lead at the break.
On the Wildcats first possession of the second half, Budzien hit a 52-yard field goal with 4:11 to play in the frame, pushing the lead to 13-3. Nebraska responded with a 49-yard field goal from Lindsay with 1:39 left in the third quarter.
With 2:02 to play, Nebraska took over at its own 43-yard line. With :38 left, T. Armstrong found Q. Enunwa for a 13-yard gain on fourth-and-five. They connected again on third-and-12 with :22 left before Armstrong found J. Long for a 27-yard touchdown pass with :06 to play.
Both teams settled for field goals in the first overtime, with Northwestern hitting from 20 yards and Nebraska connecting from 34-yards out.
In the second overtime, A. Abdullah scored from inside the one-yard line for the Huskers. Northwestern answered with a four-yard strike from Colter to P. YoungbloodAry.
Heading to the third overtime, both teams were forced to go for two. Trumpy scored from a yard out, but the Wildcats failed on the two point conversion. In the Huskers half, Abdullah scored from two-yards out. The Huskers won the game on a wide open pass from Armstrong to A. Janovich.
