Wildcats lose heartbreaker in Badgers
Field goal as time expires wins it for Wisconsin
EVANSTON, Ill. - A 68-yard drive in less than :55 led to the game-winning field goal for Wisconsin, as they edged Northwestern 41-38 at Ryan Field.
The Wildcats got off to another hot start, as K. Colter found K. Prater for a 13-yard touchdown, giving Northwestern a 7-0 lead with 2:53 left in the first quarter. Two plays later, C. Ellis intercepted T. McEvoy. The Wildcats didn't have the ball long, as Colter was intercepted by T. Floyd on the next play.
On the first play of the second quarter, J. White plunged in from inside the one, tying the game 7-7 with 6:59 to play in the half. Northwestern fumbled the ball on its next play, with the Badgers recovering. Four plays later, the Badgers took a 14-7 lead on a one-yard run by McEvoy.
With 1:55 to play in the half, V. Mark went 18 yards for a touchdown, tying the game 14-14. The Badgers took a 21-14 lead into halftime after McEvoy found White for a five-yard touchdown pass with :37 left.
The Badgers looked to put the game away early in the second half. On the opening drive, McEvoy found Pedersen for a 14-yard strike, as the Badgers went up 28-14 with 4:26 to play in the third. Two plays later, P. Jean intercepted Colter.
It took just three plays for White to score from nine-yards out, as the Badgers went up 35-14 with 3:31 to play in the third. With :29 left in the third, the Wildcats looked to get back in the game with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Colter to R. Lawrence.
Wisconsin went up 38-21 with 5:04 to play in the game with a 49-yard field goal from K. French. With 3:30 to play, J. Budzien was good from 44-yards out, cutting the lead to 38-24.
On the next play, McEvoy was intercepted by D. Jones. Colter threw passes for 20, 14 and 31 yards, with the 31-yard strike going for a touchdown to Mark with 2:46 to play.
The Badgers punted with 1:23 to play. On third-and-five, Colter found Lawrence for a 28-yard touchdown, tying the game at 38 with :57 to play.
After a two-yard rush by White, the Badgers went to the air to win the game. McEvoy threw passes of 21, 14 and 26 yards to get in field goal range. As time expired, French connected from 23-yards out for the win.
