USC and Arizona St would play in a great game that would come down to the final drive. The Trojans would rely mostly on their ground game that they were able to get going, but then they would try and pass and be sacked on 2 consecutive plays forcing them into a punt. Arizona State's opening possession would lead to a field goal and a 3-0 advantage. USC would answer back though on a 6 play drive that would be capped by a 17 yard pass from Max Wittek to Silas Redd. Arizona State and USC would both score touchdowns on their first possesions of the 2nd quarter and Arizona State would get the ball with just under a minute remaining. They would then hit on a big pass play of 64 yards and then score 3 plays later on a 2 yard pass for a 17-14 halftime advantage. "With ASU getting the ball to start the 2nd half we knew we would need to get a stop of some sort in order to get ourselves back in the game," said Coach Dealer.
That wouldn't come on the opening possession as ASU would go 12 plays and score on a 3 yard rushing TD. The Trojans would answer right back though as Redd out of the Wildcat formation would take it 66 yards for a touchdown and cut the lead to 24-21. USC would get their first stop of the game on the next possession holding them to a 3 and out. After a nice return by Lee, the Trojans would only need 4 plays before Redd was running it in from 6 yards out to go up 28-24. Arizona State would answer right at the end of the 3rd quarter on a long 3rd and 18 they would fit the ball through the smallest of windows and the WR would take it the rest of the way for an 83 yard touchdown and a 31-28 lead going into the 4th. The Trojans would not be fazed and would rely heavily on their ground game and would end their drive on a 4 yard run by Redd for a 35-31 advantage. The Trojan defense would not be up to the task of stopping ASU as they would march down the field and score on a 5 play drive for a 38-35 lead. USC would then get the ball with just a little over 3 minutes to play but would have it down inside the 10 yard line with :30 left. After two runs by Redd got them down to the 1 they would have to call a hurry up and would again try to run, Redd would be tackled just at the 1 yard line and USC would use their 3rd and final timeout. "We really thought about going for it right there," said Dealer, "in the end we decided to go with a kick to take the game into OT." Well that would be easier said than done as the USC kicker would boink the kick off the upright and USC would lose the game. "That's a killer," said Dealer, "really a heart breaker. To play that well and have it end like that just sucks."
great game man! was a lot of fun, good luck the rest of the way
Grice's 3 touchdown day was big for the Sun Devils
ARIZONA STATE ESCAPES ON MISSED FIELD GOAL
Sun Devils Win 38-35
The (2-2) Arizona State Sun Devils went on the road to take on the (2-0) USC Trojans who were coming off two bye weeks.
USC would get the ball to start the game but would gain just 3 yards on six plays and was forced to punt. Arizona State would get points on their first drive when Garoutte connected on a 43 yard field goal. USC came right back and took the lead on Wittek's 17 yard touchdown pass to Redd as the first quarter ended. The Sun Devils would answer right back when their drive ended with Grice crossing the goal line for a 1 yard touchdown. Back came USC as their drive resulted in a touchdown from two yards out, by Redd, to retake the lead 14-10. Arizona State's next drive started with :51 left in the half and they were able to work their way down field and score on a Kelly to Agweune 2 yard touchdown pass. The Sun Devils lead 17-14 going into the half.
Arizona State got the ball to start the 2nd half and would increase their lead as their drive ended on a Grice 3 yard touchdown run. Down 10, USC responded on their next play from scrimmage when Redd would score a 66 yard touchdown run. Arizona State would be forced to punt on their next drive and USC was poised to take the lead back. They did just that when their drive was capped off by another Redd touchdown, this one from 6 yards out. Arizona State took the lead right back when Kelly found Agweune for an 83 yard touchdown to end the third quarter. USC would take the lead back on their next drive when Redd would score his 5th touchdown of the game on a 4 yard run. Back came the Sun Devils who would take the lead on a Grice 16 yard touchdown run. Arizona State's lead was now 38-35 with 3:15 to go in the game. USC would use all but 1 second of that time to make their way inside the Arizona State 5 yard line. On 3rd down and goal from the 2 Redd would get stopped at the 1 yard line with :04 to go and no time outs left for the Trojans. They went for the tie but Heidari's hard angled attempt from the right hash would bounce off the right upright and the crowd was stunned. Kelly took a knee to run out the clock and secure the Sun Devils win.
