The Arizona State Sun Devils went on the road to take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The Sun Devils were looking to go to 3-0 while the Cowboys were trying to get to 2-0.
Arizona State received the ball to start the game and their drive sputtered at first before a 57 yard touchdown pass from Eubank to Agweune put a hush over the crowd. The Sun Devils' defense would force a punt, on the Cowboys first drive, to put their offense back on the field. Arizona State would be unable to get a first down but was in range for a 56 yard field goal. Garoutte's kick would come up just short, however, and the Sun Devils' lead remained at 7-0. Oklahoma State would take advantage as Chelf lead a drive that ended with his 12 yard touchdown pass to Jackson tying the game. Arizona State's next drive would have them in field goal range again, but this time Garoutte would connect from 28 yards out. Oklahoma State would pick up where they left off as their next drive resulted in another touchdown. This time, it was Chelf connecting with Moore from 17 yards out and the Cowboys first lead of the game. Eubank would lead the Sun Devils' offense down the field, late in the first half, as they looked to take the lead before the half. They reached the Cowboys 26 yard line before Eubank would be picked off by Gary. Oklahoma State would take advantage of the turnover as they got into field goal range and Stonebraker would connect from 48 yards out for 17-10 lead.
Oklahoma State would get the ball to start the second half and wasted little time as they moved down the field and scored on Smith's 2 yard touchdown run. Arizona State would answer when their ensuing drive was capped off by a Eubank to Agweune 28 yard touchdown pass. The Cowboys would waste little time answering when Moore and Chelf connected on a 75 yard touchdown pass. Back and forth they went as Arizona State's next drive finished in the endzone on Foster's 41 yard touchdown run. Going into the fourth quarter Oklahoma State led 31-24. On the next Cowboys drive, the Sun Devils would force and recover a fumble and give their offense a chance to tie the game. They did just that as a long Arizona State drive finished with a 3 yard touchdown run by Foster with just over a minute to go in the game. Oklahoma State tried to get into field goal range to win the game but would be forced to punt and Arizona State kneeled the ball to go into overtime.
Arizona State started the first overtime on offense and scored on the first play when Eubank found Coyle for a 25 yard touchdown. Oklahoma State's drive would take a bit longer but the result was the same as Chelf scored on an 11 yard run. The Cowboys would get the second overtime going as Chelf would connect with Stewart from 27 yards out on 3rd and 13 as the crowd was rocking. Arizona State would not be able to answer as Eubank would get picked off by Lampkin to end the game.
