ARIZONA STATE TAKES DOWN NORTHWESTERN
Sun Devils Get Two Defensive Scores In 38-24 Win
The (1-0) Arizona State Sun Devils went on the road to take on the (0-0) Northwestern Wildcats. ASU was coming off a big win against Georgia while Northwestern was playing it's first game of the season after a bye in week 1.
Arizona State received the ball to start the game looked to quiet the home crowd. They moved the ball a little before being forced to convert on a 37 yard field goal by Garoutte. The Sun Devils' defense would fare better than their offense when, on Northwestern's first play from scrimmage, Nelson picked off Colter and returned it for a touchdown and 10-0 ASU lead. Not to be discouraged, Colter would lead his team down the field, on the next drive, and the Wildcats would score on a Mark 3 yard touchdown run to get within three. Arizona State struck right back when Eubank would evade the pass rush and throw on the run to Foster who would complete the 47 yard touchdown play to put the Sun Devils up 17-7. On the next Northwestern play Wadood would pick off Colter and return it for a touchdown. The Arizona State Sun Devils were now up 24-7 and the rout was on. Northwestern would answer with a field goal on their next drive to pull within 14. The Wildcats' defense would force the Sun Devils to punt the ball on the following drive, but would be forced to punt it back after getting near mid-field. The Sun Devils looked to increase the lead before the half but Garoutte's 53 yard field goal attempt fell short as time expired.
Down 24-10 Northwestern would get the ball to start the second half and looked to get the crowd back in it. But on the first play from scrimmage Colter would be intercepted again. ASU's Nelson would be the culprit once again and the Sun Devils had the ball at the Wilcats 23. Three plays later, Eubank found Ozier from 10 yards out and the touchdown increased Arizona State's lead to 31-10. Northwestern answered right back as they put together a long drive that found the endzone when Colter scored from 14 yards out on the option keeper. Northwestern's defense would force another punt and, again, the Wildcat's looked to cut in to the 14 point lead. They would get to the Arizona State 10 yard line before Colter would throw his fourth pick of the game. Wadood has his second pick of the game and this one was huge as it was in his endzone. Arizona State put together a long drive, pounding the ball, before Eubank hit Coyle from 8 yards out to increase the lead to 38-17. With 2:49 left Colter lead another drive down the field. He would go 6-7 passing for 75 yards including his 20 yard touchdown to Lawrence to get back within 14. Arizona State would recover the onside kick but couldn't put the game away as Garoutte missed his second field goal attempt of the game. This attempt was from 42 yards out and Northwestern got the ball back with :52 left in the game and in need of a miracle. It would not happen as their drive ended at the Sun Devil 6 yard line as time expired.
