Pick 6 seals UTSA win, 44-34
Article By: Coming off two devastating losses, Coach Mort and the Roadrunners turned their attention to the ECU Pirates and the intent to give the fans their first home victory of the season. Mission accomplished.
A 16-14 halftime lead was quickly taken by the Pirates on the opening drive of the 3Q, but the Roadrunners were ready to explode. Following a lead changing TD to make it 23-21, the Roadrunners snagged two INTs (one pick six) and the 2 point lead exploded to 37-21. But the Pirates wouldn't go away. At TD strike, followed by an interception of their own, led to another TD and closed the lead to 37-34. The Roadrunner's knew they'd seen this outcome before.
With a narrow lead and 4 min remaining, the Roadrunners did the one thing the couldn't do: failed to convert a single first down. Punting back to the ECU offense was a risk, but Coach Mort put his faith in the defense.
The Pirates calmly and methodically drove down the field, killing clock and forcing UTSA to use it's timeouts to preserve as much time as possible. With 3rd and Goal from the 2, DB Zah Frazier jumped a flat route, and with no Pirates in the way, raced 95 yards for a TD and a 10 point lead. With mere seconds left on the clock, the Roadrunners played conservative, keep-the-ball-in-front defense and iced the victory with a Denver Harris INT.
