CFP Reveal 1 Review

Article By: Andy

While the media has been the focus the last few weeks, this week we bring the focus to analyzing the only poll that matters, the CFP.

1. Ole Miss
There shouldn't be an argument from anyone on this one. With a combined 6-0 record in quad 1 and 2 games including wins over LSU and since this has been released Georgia. Even if he loses I would argue he should stay here.

2. Clemson
This also feels like a very easy rank. Yes we have undefeated Utah and Oregon behind them, but Clemson is a clear step up from them in terms of what has happened on the field to date.

3. Utah
He has been destroying everyone this year, to the tune of an average winning margin of 29 points. But his non conference schedule leaves something to be desired. He got a very nice draw in terms of the conference schedule that should help lead him easily into the conference title game, but if he drops a game or 2 along the way we aren't super far from comparing him to Oregon.

4. Oregon
Lots and lots of talk about Oregon and the schedule. I may have missed it but I wonder if Oregon is actually 4 in the rankings or if they were lower but would get the 4 seed based on conference champion. I could see Alabama or Texas being worthy of the 4th spot over them. But this is semantics as Oregon would still get the bye.

5. Alabama
A big win over Missouri this past block with an overall tough schedule. It doesn't stop as he has LSU coming up next. While far from an elimination game, once you get a second loss you are just hoping the committee is on your side. For Alabama the good news is he is at 5 and not where LSU is.

6. Texas
I don't know if the suspensions were taken into play at all, but they are neck and neck with Alabama. The only loss coming to the top team shouldn't hurt him quite as much.

7. Florida
Pleasantly surprised to see Florida up this high. The loss to Texas will likely bump him down, but starting at 7 I don't think it bumps him out. The downside now for Florida is he is now just barely over .500 at 3-2 in his games against top 50 Massey teams.

8. Missouri
Was honestly a little surprised to find them right where everyone had them all season and then after a loss. I know this and the rankings aren't the same, but still. Like a team later on this list, when you don't have many tests, and you fail one of them it isn't good. Now in saying that, I fully think this is a good team and will do some damage. But if he loses to Oklahoma or really anyone on that remaining schedule, I think he is out completely with no real shot to get back in outside of a miracle domino effect of teams losing.

9. Georgia
Unfortunately for him, his blowout loss to Ole Miss might be the end of his CFP hopes. He really needs there to be a lot of 2 loss teams that have a not so great resume. The big issue is the Ole Miss game was ugly. If it was 35-28 or something in that range it matters and he probably bumps out, but he is there for the next team to lose, but a 35-3 loss is hard to bounce back from when you have 3 and want to make your way in.

10. Notre Dame
Climbed into the top 10 after the early Georgia loss. And will need to keep rattling off wins. Still eyeing up that big game against USC at the end of the year.

11. LSU
A little surprised to find him this low, but this is the classic its this season versus everything you actually know from other years. Only 1-1 in games against top 25 Massey teams, had a chance to solidify a number one overall seed against Ole Miss but lost. I think he should be up there neck and neck with Missouri, maybe even above.

12. Florida State
This is an irrelevant reaction now as they lost, but I was pretty surprised to see them this high. I figured they would be just off but not 12 just off. Then being just off while having a very good chance to play himself in with the remaining schedule. But after losing to Notre Dame there should be no chance at a CFP spot now.

13 Tennessee
He had some really nice wins early in the year that have since turned into wins that were more of a shoulder shrug. Right now Oklahoma is the big resume building win, but Oklahoma is only a resume building win right now because he beat Texas.

14. Texas Tech
The next 4 teams are interchangeable to me with 1 of them either in or out based on the conference title. His win over Cincy is arguably the only notable one to date. He got a quad 2 win over Arizona State but beating a 3-5 team on the road isn't something you should really plant your flag on as to why you should be in. Beat Iowa State and Colorado and then maybe he inches into the conversation of first out. I just think a 2 loss SEC team is more deserving.

15. Oklahoma
For how many games still need to be played this feels entirely too high. Can get here, maybe should get here, but not yet.

16. Colorado
Like Missouri, failed the first real test. Luckily has 2 more tests coming up this block that are bigger. Lose either one and it's bye bye CFP, win both and I think it is move on up to where Florida State was.

17. Central Michigan
This rank only matters as he is currently viewed as the top group of 5 team at the moment. I would be interested to know how far USF and FAU are behind him. Crazy as it is to date CMU has the better SOS than both American contenders.

Not listed
USF/FAU- surprised to not see them listed at all, but they are likely 18/ the next G5 team. Whoever wins that game I still think has a chance to jump CMU, but it is still a little crazy to see their SOS not as good as CMU.
