Sam Houston State Eyes Upset as They Travel to Face Iowa State
Sam Houston State heads to Ames to face the Iowa State Cyclones, who’ve had a rough start to the season. Through two games, the Cyclones have given up 73 points while scoring just 48. Quarterback Rocco Becht has shown flashes, going 34-of-50 for 551 yards with 4 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. The backfield has been split between Abu Salma III (89 yards on 24 carries) and Jalen Jackson (37 yards on 10 carries), but neither has broken out yet.
On paper, Iowa State looks better. Bigger conference. Deeper roster. But don’t count out Coach Vic and his 2-0 Sam Houston State Bearcats just yet.
Quarterback Hunter Watson, the Conference USA Player of the Week for Block 1, has been lights out—throwing for 440 yards and 4 touchdowns on 29-of-44 passing with just one interception. He’s also added 82 yards on the ground. The run game is balanced, with Jay Ducker and John Gentry combining for 257 rushing yards on 46 carries.
That rushing attack could be the key. Control the clock, limit turnovers, and take advantage of a shaky Cyclones defense.
Most expect Iowa State to hold serve at home. But I’m calling the upset. Sam Houston State pulls off a 35-31 win and stuns the Big 12.
