NDL Rivalry Analysis: Florida vs Miami

Article By: Block M

The old quote goes: “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” and that is a bad sign for the likes of several teams in the NDL.

From Miami to Michigan and all the way to the Northwest in Washington, the NDL has a series of lopsided rivalries where fan bases of one side are just hoping for a change in fortune and a couple of wins over their hated rivals.

Today, we analyze the Seminole War Canoe series between Florida and Miami. This game is set to see its 12th encounter in NDL S32 Block 1 as NDL legends BIGmike and Dealer4014 face off in Miami.

The Numbers
Series Record: 10-1 Florida
Longest Winning Streak: 7 Florida
First Meeting: Season 1 (Florida 27, Miami 14)
Last Meeting: Season 31 (Florida 21, Miami 0)

While not a consistent rivalry that is played every season, whenever Florida and Miami get together it’s always a big deal and that story is not any different in NDL S32 despite Florida having the upper hand in the series.

Miami’s only win in the series came in NDL S28 when the Hurricanes dismantled the Gators 49-21 in Miami. The Gators hold the longest winning streak in the series though at seven, which was snapped by the S28 win by Miami.

The Gators are currently working on a new streak having won each encounter of the CFB era of NDL in what is currently a “locked-in” game and should remain that way through NDL S35.

Historically, the Gators are averaging a 36-17 victory over the Hurricanes and have shut the Hurricanes out twice, both times being coached by BIGmike when doing so.

Last season in the 21-0 Florida victory the Gators only amassed 222 yards offensively but forced five turnovers, all interceptions in The Swamp.

This game is certainly circled by the Miami Hurricanes after last season's performance. Additionally, Florida will be the only P4 opponent for Miami until ACC begins in W5 as the ‘Canes play Bowling Green, Toledo, and San Diego State after hosting the Gators.

The Gators however begin a grueling gauntlet of a schedule by visiting Miami. The Gators face no G5 opponents and host Virginia Tech in W2 before beginning SEC play at Texas A&M in W3.

Regardless of the road afterwards, a matchup of this magnitude will dictate how the season will go for both teams in this must-win game.
