The mountain west conference continues to make strides and turn heads in the NDL. Two squads in the top 25, several teams should be bowl eligible and it looks to be the home of the NDL generation X which makes it the place to be. Although all the above mentions make the MWC a gentleman’s dream, it’s the running backs that make it happen.
The little known MWC conference is quickly becoming a running backs dream. The conference already has 2 ( Jeanty & Sherrod ) 1,000 yard rushers. Boise State all-world back Ashton Jeanty has already eclipsed the 1,400 mark with 1,425 to go along with his 14 scores. ( which puts him 3rd in the nation).
The conference also features 4 backs with 10 touchdowns or more. Marquez Cooper and SJSU back Floyd Chalk IV join Jeanty and Sherrod on the list of backs who love the to find that end-zone.
The conference also has 3 ball carriers who have broke off runs of 80 plus yards and 9 have broke off runs of 70 or better from scrimmage. USAFA running back Cade Harris leads the MWC in yards per attempt ( players with 10 or more carries) and is 6th in the nation at 8.64 yards per touch. Jeanty is a close second with 8.43 .
It’s not just about running the ball for these athletes as the conference has 3 running backs in the top 10 as pass catches. Landon Sims of Hawaii leads the conference in receptions with 42 snags , but what is more impressive is he is 2nd in the nation among backs. Sims is a threat for sure , he has accounted for 5 touchdown catches on the young season.
So while the rest of the NDL is in love with the long ball, quick passes and fast scores the coaches from the MWC continue to establish the ground game and a Woody Hayes concept of 3 yards and a cloud of dust.
