The Sam Houston State Bearkats showcased their strength in a dominating 45-17 victory over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers on Saturday afternoon. The Bearkats’ performance was led by a sensational outing from junior running back Jay Ducker, who racked up 250 yards on the ground and added another 100 yards receiving, proving to be a nightmare for the Hilltoppers' defense.
The victory marked a statement win for Sam Houston State, who displayed offensive firepower while simultaneously shutting down WKU's attack. Despite the heavy offensive output, it was the Bearkats' defense that stole the show. They completely stifled Hilltoppers quarterback Caden Veltkamp, limiting him to just 13 completions while picking him off twice. WKU’s offense was held to only 280 yards total, making it a long day for the Hilltoppers.
Ducker’s relentless running set the tone for the Bearkats early, and it was clear from the opening whistle that the Hilltoppers would have their hands full. In addition to his offensive contributions, Ducker displayed versatility by catching passes out of the backfield and consistently finding ways to move the chains. His impact was felt all over the field, and it was clear that Sam Houston's offense would not be denied.
After the game, Bearkats head coach Larry Bell praised his team's effort but emphasized that there is still room for growth. “I’m happy with the defense, they really showed up today,” Bell said. “Offensively, I’m okay with how we performed, but we need to open up the passing game more to help the running game. I wasn’t thrilled with the special teams, though. Nothing exciting is happening there right now.”
Bell’s candid assessment didn’t stop there. When asked about the direction of the team, he expressed optimism about the culture the Bearkats are building. “We’re building something special here. The guys are working hard, and the culture is strong. We’re excited about what’s to come.”
When pressed on his thoughts about his team moving into the top 25 rankings, Bell delivered a memorable response that encapsulated his no-nonsense approach to coaching and the game itself. “Who gives a shit about the rankings?” Bell said, his words exuding confidence and a bit of humor. “I don’t care if it’s ranked the best beer in the world or the worst beer in the world – I’m drinking it, and my team is going to show up, work hard, and kick ass regardless of any ranking.”
The victory moves the Bearkats to 4-0 on the season, further solidifying their status as a contender in the FCS. With a tough schedule ahead, Sam Houston will look to continue building on their momentum, as Bell and his team focus on improving their weaknesses while maintaining the intensity that’s been key to their success.
For Western Kentucky, it was a tough loss that raises questions heading into the second half of the season. The Hilltoppers’ offense will need to regroup and find a way to recover from this setback, with tougher tests looming on the horizon.
As for the Bearkats, they continue to build steam under Bell's leadership, with high hopes for what’s to come in the rest of the campaign.
