Sun Belt Conference Power Rankings
Article By: Sun Belt Conference Football Power Rankings - Week 2, 2025
This power ranking reflects the current state of play in the Sun Belt Conference after the conclusion of Block 1. These ratings will change a lot as we start to get more snaps under our belt, but we can see some initial observations right out of the gate. With teams like Old Dominion and Southern Miss setting the pace, the biggest thing we can expect is to see another year of SBC conference teams represented in the Top 25. It's a conference that has the talent to compete with bigger brands and features another group of coaches with the talent to led their teams to the bright lights and big games in January.
1. Old Dominion (3-0)
The Monarchs are on fire, securing a remarkable start with victories over Power Four teams Rutgers and Texas Tech. Their undefeated record has them on the brink of entering the top 25 national rankings. Old Dominion's ability to compete at this level shows not only their offensive prowess but also a defense that's been more than up to the task. They're setting the pace early in the Sun Belt, indicating they might just be the team to beat this season.
2. Southern Miss (2-0)
Under new leadership with Coach Sauxy, the Golden Eagles are soaring. They've outscored their opponents by a staggering 94-24 margin, showcasing an explosive offense and a defense that seems to have found new life. This early success suggests that Southern Miss might have found the right coach to revive their football program and push them back towards the top of the conference.
3. Marshall (2-0)
The Thundering Herd have made headlines with their performance, particularly with a victory against Washington State in what was a family affair for their head coach. This win not only marks a strong start but also a statement game, showing the Herd's capability to compete against higher-ranked teams and potentially secure a spot in a bowl game this season. As an added bonus, their head coach, Sarge, gets to take a trip to the Bahamas on Washington State as a reward for their victory.
4. Coastal Carolina (2-1)
Despite a narrow loss to Middle Tennessee State, the Chanticleers have shown they can dominate when given the opportunity, with convincing wins against Kent State and UMass. Their early season results suggests they could climb higher in the rankings, especially with their offensive firepower on display.
5. Appalachian State (0-1)
Although they kicked off the season with a loss against #18 Utah, the Mountaineers proved they can hang with elite Power Four teams, losing by just three points in a close contest. While they lost to the Utes, the competitiveness in the game showed that App State will be a significant contender within the Sun Belt as the season progresses.
6. Georgia Southern (1-0)
The Eagles started the season with a bang, defeating Bowling Green convincingly while forcing an impressive six turnovers. If they can maintain this level of defensive disruption, Georgia Southern could be a dark horse in the conference race.
7. Arkansas State (1-1)
The Red Wolves have had a mixed bag in Block 1, with a strong win followed by a significant loss. Their matchup against Ball State in the next block will be crucial for gauging their season trajectory as it will be their second game against a team of equally talent. Their performance against Akron shows promise against future Sun Belt teams, but they need consistency on defense to help that come true.
8. Louisiana (1-1)
The Ragin' Cajuns have shown a blend of offensive potential and defensive solidity, keeping opponents under 20 points per game. Their loss to Ohio was unexpected, but their defense's performance so far keeps them high in the rankings. A tough schedule ahead will test their mettle and determine how they fare heading into conference play.
9. Georgia State (1-0)
The Panthers kicked off their season with a win, introducing a new offensive scheme under Coach Toro. With tougher opponents on the horizon, like Wake Forest, this early success will need to be matched with strategic gameplay to beat stronger opponents and start to climb the rankings.
10. Texas State (0-2)
Despite an 0-2 record, the Bobcats have shown they can score against Power Four teams, notably putting up 28 points against Ole Miss. Their defense needs to catch up, but with a lighter schedule ahead, expect Texas State to notch some wins soon.
11. Louisiana Monroe (0-1)
The Warhawks nearly pulled off a dramatic comeback against Western Michigan, suggesting potential under their new coaching staff. If they can replicate the intensity of that fourth-quarter performance, Monroe could swiftly rise in the standings. It looked like they finally figured out the playbook and roster late but we'll need to see that same fire week over week if they want to make a run for a bowl game for the second year in a row.
12. James Madison (0-0)
The Dukes had no games this block due to scheduling issues, but they are expected to make an impact once they start playing. Their historical performance indicates they'll be contenders once they get going.
13. South Alabama (0-1)
After a shutout loss to Buffalo, things look bleak for the Jaguars, especially with their coach resigning amidst upcoming tough games. The team needs a miraculous turnaround or roster adjustments to climb back into contention. They round out OOC with games against Texas and TCU so whoever gets promoted into the top spot will be faced with a trial by fire as they try to win back the fans.
14. Troy (0-0)
With no games played, Troy remains a mystery. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see what they bring to the table when they finally hit the field.
