Block 2 Big XII Power Rankings: Early Season Shake-Ups?
As we move into Block 2 of the season, the Big XII Power Rankings are beginning to take shape after some exciting and high-stakes games. While a handful of teams have already made strong statements on the field, we’re also eagerly awaiting the season debuts of a few programs still yet to play their first game. With so much still to unfold, it’s important to remember that we’re just getting started. There’s plenty of time for teams to establish their identity and prove where they belong in the rankings. As always, the competitive nature of the Big XII ensures that each week brings new opportunities for teams to rise or fall, making it one of the most unpredictable and thrilling conferences to follow.
The initial edition of our power rankings was crafted using preseason votes from the individual coaches, offering an early snapshot of how teams were viewed before any games were played. These rankings served as a starting point, giving us a sense of expectations heading into the season. However, as the competition heats up and teams take the field, we now shift our focus to the conference commissioner, who will assess teams based on their actual performances each block. This approach ensures that the rankings evolve as teams demonstrate their true capabilities on the field, reflecting not just potential, but real-time results.
As always, we’ll start from the bottom and work our way up, carefully analyzing each team’s progress and positioning. With every week bringing new developments, the rankings will continue to fluctuate, giving fans an exciting, dynamic view of the conference as the season unfolds.
(-) 16. West Virginia Mountaineers 0-0 (0-0)
As of this release no games have been played.
(-) 15. Arizona State Sun Devils 0-0(0-0)
As of this release no games have been played.
(-4) 14. Baylor Bears 0-0 (0-0)
As of this release no games have been played.
(-) 13. Oklahoma State Cowboys 0-1 (0-0)
Oklahoma State stays put for now, with three other teams having yet to play. Their loss came against a tough opponent, but playing at home and being the higher-ranked team, they’ll need to bounce back quickly..
(-) 12. BYU Cougars 0-1 (0-0)
Despite a home loss to Fresno State, BYU remains in the same spot. They had a slow start last year, but it’s too early to assume history will repeat itself.
(-3) 11. Texas Tech Red Raiders 0-2 (0-0)
Texas Tech has faced a tough opening schedule, but back-to-back blowouts — including a loss to the #3 team in the NDL — drop them in the rankings. They’ll need to regroup quickly.
(-5) 10. Iowa State Cyclones 0-1 (0-0)
A tough shutout loss to instate rival Iowa. While Iowa is a strong team, being blanked 31-0 results in a significant drop for the Cyclones.
(+5) 9. Houston Cougars 1-1 (0-0)
Houston rebounded from a loss to Mississippi State with a solid win over Texas State. They showed resilience, but their loss to Mississippi State — a team that has struggled in the NDL historically — raises some concerns.
(-1) 8. Arizona Wildcats 0-1 (0-0)
Arizona suffered a close loss to USC. They’re a solid team and should bounce back, but they’ll need to find a better playbook to make that happen.
(-3) 7. Kansas Jayhawks 0-1 (0-0)
Kansas took a tough touchdown loss to Wisconsin and now faces a tough test against #3 Tennessee. The road ahead may be challenging.
(+5) 6. Cincinnati Bearcats 1-1 (0-0)
Cincinnati’s loss to Louisville was expected, but they bounced back in impressive fashion with a 31-7 victory over Pitt. While they may not be the same team as last season, this performance shows they’re still competitive.
(+4) 5. Kansas State Wildcats 1-0 (0-0)
Kansas State earned a close win, one that might have been tighter than expected. Their defense has some work to do, and they need to stay focused and not overlook future matchups before W6.
(+2) 4. Texas Christian Horned Frogs 1-0 (0-0)
TCU opened the season with a solid offensive performance. However, they face two tough challenges in Block 2, and how they respond to those will shape their season.
(-) 3. Utah Utes 1-0 (0-0)
Utah won, but it was a game that perhaps didn’t go exactly as planned. App State proved to be tougher than expected, and while Utah should be able to improve, they’ll need to avoid letting teams stick around like that.
(-1) Central Florida Knights 2-0 (0-0)
UCF earned dominant wins over Northwestern and Washington, and despite staying undefeated, they drop to #2 this week. With a big upcoming matchup against TCU, it’ll be interesting to see if they can reclaim the top spot.
(+1) Colorado Buffaloes 2-0 (0-0)
Colorado has been dominant early, with blowout wins over UCLA and #23 Michigan. After some easier matchups this block, all eyes will be on their upcoming showdown with Central Florida in Block 3.
