Nevada Wolfpack Triumphs Over WKU

Article By: GraysonHulett

In a thrilling start to the 2025 college football season, the Nevada Wolfpack secured a 38-21 victory over the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in the opening round of the Beefy Cup, marking a historic moment for the program. Not only did the Wolfpack pull off the win, but it also gave head coach Grayson Hulett his first victory at Nevada, and the team’s first in two seasons.

Coach Hulett, who joined Nevada after a successful stint at Georgia State, where he led the team to a 7-5 record and a bowl game, has made it clear that his mission is to restore Nevada to its former glory. After Nevada's program chose to move in a different direction, Hulett embraced the challenge, and his impact was immediately evident in this opening game.

**A New Era Under Hulett**

One of the hallmark strategies Coach Hulett is bringing to Nevada is the return of the Pistol Offense—a system made famous by former head coach Chris Ault. Ault, a coaching legend in Nevada, built the Wolfpack’s identity with the Pistol, and Hulett is determined to revive that tradition and build upon it for the future. Against Western Kentucky, the Pistol was on full display, and the offensive execution spoke volumes.

Nevada’s offense was efficient and explosive, racking up 406 total yards while holding Western Kentucky to just 290 yards. The Wolfpack's defense was also impressive, grabbing three crucial interceptions that kept the Hilltoppers from gaining any momentum. The strong defensive play combined with offensive firepower helped Nevada establish control throughout the game.

**Standout Performances**

Quarterback Brendon Lewis, who was a key addition to the team, had an impressive outing, finishing 13-of-21 for 210 yards, two touchdown passes, and a rushing touchdown. Lewis played with confidence and poise, showing that he has the tools to lead the Wolfpack under Hulett's new regime.

The real star of the night, however, was running back Patrick Garwo III, who was named the Offensive Player of the Game. Garwo showcased his exceptional skills, rushing 22 times for 146 yards and a touchdown. His ability to break tackles and consistently gain yards set the tone for Nevada’s offensive attack, and the offensive line was critical in opening up massive holes for him to exploit. The line also kept Brendon Lewis clean throughout the game, providing the quarterback with ample time to make plays in the pocket.

**Looking Ahead**

With the win, the Nevada Wolfpack has set the tone for what promises to be a promising season under Coach Hulett. The victory not only gives the team a boost in confidence, but it also demonstrates that the program is heading in the right direction. There is still plenty of work to be done, but Nevada is excited for what lies ahead, especially as they look to continue their success in the Beefy Cup.

After the game, Coach Hulett, no stranger to hard work and dedication, will take a brief moment to relax and celebrate his first win at Nevada. He’ll be heading to Las Vegas to enjoy some downtime and, no doubt, celebrate in style with his well-earned sign-on bonus. As the Wolfpack head into the rest of the season, they’ll be looking to build off this momentum and keep the winning streak alive.

Best of luck to Coach Hulett and the Nevada Wolfpack for the rest of the Beefy Cup and the upcoming season. May their success on the field continue, and here's wishing Coach Hulett the best of luck with the tables in Las Vegas!
