Houston, TX — In a season marred by inconsistency and frustration, the Houston Cougars' final game only added to the misery. Facing BYU at home, Houston delivered another flat performance, falling 42-10 in a game that felt over before halftime as Caleb McMickle got his second consecutive start once again proved disappointing says the stat line 23-36-244-0-3.

Down 28-10 at the break, the Cougars showed little fight, and the second half became a formality as BYU coasted to an easy victory. It was another uninspiring outing from a team that looked worn down by the grind of a dismal season. Houston’s offense sputtered, unable to sustain drives or protect the ball, while the defense seemed powerless to stop BYU’s relentless attack.

Turnovers were again the story, as Houston coughed up the ball four times, compounding their offensive struggles. While the yardage totals might have offered a glimmer of hope in other circumstances, the mistakes were too costly to overcome, and BYU capitalized at every opportunity.

Head coach Rags watched helplessly from the sideline, his team outmatched in every phase. For a program with higher aspirations, finishing the season 3-9 and missing a bowl game for the second consecutive year is a bitter pill to swallow. The Cougars appeared lifeless, lacking the spark and intensity that fans hoped to see in the season’s final game.

Meanwhile, BYU left Houston with renewed optimism, ending their own season on a high note at 5-7. For Houston, however, the loss caps a year of disappointment and raises serious questions about the program’s future direction.

As the offseason begins, the Cougars face the daunting task of rebuilding not just their roster but their confidence and identity. For now, Houston will stay home for the holidays, their season ending with a whimper rather than a roar.
