Big XII Power Rankings
Article By: It's the third iteration of the Big XII Rankings. Every team in the XII has played at least one conference game. Let's take a look at how everyone is fairing after 7 Weeks (4 Blocks) of games.
16 (-)
West Virginia Mountaineers 0-4 (0-2) - Same record as last release so we still have to have some reserved judgement on this team. Several teams have lost more conference games, but those other teams do have at least one regular season win whereas the 'eer's do not. They'll hold steady at dead last for now.
15. (-)
Arizona State Sun Devils 1-5 (0-4) - ASU was able to pick up their first W on the season, but it was also out of conference...and UMass. There is no reason to move them up, could argue they should be moved down.
14. (-2)
UCF Knights 1-5 (0-3) - Another team winless in conference. They did pick up their first W of the season also though beating in-state rival USF. Could we move them up for that? Possibly but is it justifiable when other teams have more wins even if they're OOC?
13. (+1)
BYU Cougars 2-5 (0-4) - Gets the bump over UCF based on one more OOC win. They do also have one more in conference loss though. Tough to pick and choose which team is worse right now....
12. (+1)
Houston Cougars 2-4 (0-3) - It's almost a broken record down here at the bottom of the conference. This bottom five teams are a combined 0-16 vs. their conference brethren. Who will be the first to win one? When do they start playing each other?
11. (-4)
Iowa State Cyclones 3-1 (0-1) - The Cyclones have been unable to get some games in but have assured us they will be able to soon. Until then they are sitting with an 0-1 conference record. This will be a good team, but we need them to prove it first.
10. (-2)
Arizona Wildcats 4-3 (2-2) - Will the real Arizona team please stand up? That probably dated my age... The Wildcats knocked off ranked Utah, barely squeaked by a struggling BYU, and have lost to Texas Tech and ranked Colorado. Was the Utah game a fluke? I'm sure Petty thinks so.
9. (+2)
Oklahoma State Cowboys 4-2 (2-2) - Suffered back to back losses against KSU and Utah but pulled off back to back wins as well vs. BYU and WVU. But it was BYU and WVU (See bottom of the list). They move up a couple spots but it's not really so much how impressive they are but how unimpressive others are not.
8. (+2)
Texas Tech Red Raiders 3-4 (2-2) - They're beating who they need to beat, but if they want any more respect they're going to have to pull off an upset. Baylor and Cincy showed us what TTU doesn't have while ASU and UA showed us what they do have. They'll have to put it together for their upcoming rivalry game vs. TCU and then we can talk about moving them up the rankings.
7. (-2)
TCU Horned Frogs 4-2 (2-2) - TCU started out hot and then got buzz sawed by Kansas and upended by Utah. It's only two loses though. Can't afford much more though. I had them as a potential dark horse. Glad I never told you that!
6. (-2)
Kansas State Wildcats 3-2 (2-1) - Were churning right along looking like a solid team. Then Colorado happened. Can't dwell on the L too long though as rival Kansas is on the horizon. Aside of that, a favorable schedule until the last block.
5. (+4)
Utah Utes 5-1 (3-1) - Did suffer that very questionable loss to UA but has been on a tear since. The win over #16 TCU will help build the momentum and confidence. Not to mention they have to have the easiest schedule in the conference. I would say they could be on cruise control until Week 12 but we don't need another Arizona upset.
4. (-1)
Cincinnati Bearcats 5-1 (4-0) - Undefeated in the conference with their only loss coming at the hands of Kentucky. They have yet to play a true team of relevance in conference though. Next up for them is a chance to really impress though as they face a team currently ahead of them in the power rankings.
3. (+3)
Colorado Buffaloes 5-1 (3-1) - Has suffered a loss in conference which would lead you to believe Cincy should be ranked ahead of them. But Colorado has at least defeated a team that was ranked ahead of them in the power rankings earlier. Now, is KSU for real or were they lucky? We don't know yet but it's still enough, at this time, to earn Colorado a nod over Cincy. We'll see this week if I'm right or wrong.
2. (-)
Baylor Bears 7-0 (4-0) - Nipping at the heels of Kansas for the #1 spot. Can't really say for sure at this point, but Baylor either hasn't done enough to take the spot or Kansas has done just enough to keep it. Two tough games this week though. If Baylor can win them both would that be enough to over take the Jiggyhawks.
1. (-)
Kansas Jayhawks 7-0 (4-0) - Still the cream of the crop. Unbelievable they dropped a spot in the Top 25 Polls. This could serve as motivation for the remainder of the season though. Back to back shut outs by their defense and now a date with in state rival Kansas State.
