Part 1 of 2 - SEC Power Ratings
Article By: We take a look and make a few adjustments from the pre-season power ratings. It’s going to be
a fun several-week stretch here for the conference games. We’ve already seen some wars and
upsets and we’re just getting underway. Here is the SEC Media’s lower half of the rankings.
9.
A&M – [3-2 and 0-2] I have to raise my hand here as I thought the Aggies would be
up there in the rankings but after a tough loss to the Gators the Aggies took one on the
chin to Arkansas (35-21). I'm not sure there is time to get back in the race with two early
losses and they may be regulated to playing a spoiler role. It may be a bit early for such
chatter, but a brutal slate remains with four top-25 teams left. I thought the Aggies O
may get untracked when they put up 49 in week four but overall A&M has scored under
28 in four of their five games to date. A&M can turn this around but the burning question
is will they?
10.
Arkansas – [3-2 and 1-1] The Razorbacks got the huge win against A&M but so
far we may peg this team as the roller coaster among the group – uuuuup then down.
Hell, for every team I can just say ‘they have a tough remaining schedule. The
upcoming game against Tenn and LSU will provide us all the pertinent information on
how this team will finish the season. We had them high out of the gate but that seven-
point loss to Auburn at home was painful.
11.
Kentucky – [2-2 and 1-2] This team has put the “wild” in Wildcats. After starting 0-
2 the Cats took out their claws to even up their record. One of the wins was against
ranked Cincinnati to right the ship – showing they can p. The UK defense is giving it up
in bunches at 34 ppg and the O isn’t keeping up yet. I say yet as they’ve scored 52 and
37 in their most recent victories. We got it – tough shoes to fill from former coach Keg.
UK has some tough games coming up so they’ll need to beat the teams they should and
get an upset or two.
12.
Auburn – [2-3 and 1-1] Yes, yes, and yes. I likely have this team a bit low as
they’ve beat Arkansas and gave Georgia a near heart attack losing to them by seven
(28-21). With that said, we can’t overlook the early games getting them to 0-2 to start
the season. We’ll see if they continue to play well at the midway point. I do like the
schedule coming down the home stretch and if they can whip up another upset or two
along the way…that UGA game opened some eyes in the conference.
13.
Ole Miss - [1-4 and 0-2] Coach Penguin didn’t like our pre-season ranking of his
team, so I can only imagine the meme we’ll be getting this go around. It’s one of those “if
the shoe fits…” After getting the game-day win against the Badgers of Wisconsin (41-
38), the Rebels have dropped four straight. These have not been “got beat on a last-
second FG” type games. The losses have all been by double digits. I called that the OL
and DL were not SEC quality, and the Rebels are currently 13 th in rushing yards and 11 th
against the rush in conference play. There’s a shot for possibly four more wins on their
remaining schedule.
14.
Oklahoma – [0-2 and 0-1] The Sooners only have two games to date so we have
a limited view of how they’ll roll on the season. They will have the opportunity to change
this ranking quickly. OU has lost to two quality opponents, Duke and Tennessee. The
Vols game should give this team a boost of confidence – they did lose by 10 and if they
can get over the turnover issues they will be right back up in the saddle. Time will tell if
the Sooners can move out of the basement, but I have possibly four wins.
15.
Vanderbit – [0-3 and 0-1] I was expecting a little more out of the gate from this
squad as the scheduling God had the team playing two MAC teams. One of those
games needs to be played (Miami, OH) but the Commodores were stunned by Eastern
Michigan in week 3 (34-20). The O has been the big letdown for the team as they rank
near the bottom of the conference in every major statistical category. The road ahead is
a bit bumpy for conference play and we project the best-case scenario a two-win
season.
16.
Mississippi State – [0-4 and 0-1] I don’t believe anyone had high expectations for
this team. The roster just isn’t there to compete in this monstrous conference. We’re
not belittling coach beercop but facts are facts. The week one loss to Tulsa hurt the
Bulldogs as that’s one where we expected a W. Looking at the remainder of the
schedule I find it difficult to locate where they’ll have an opportunity for that first win.
Make no misstate, this team will fight to the end.
