Alabama – [5-0 and 3-0] The Tide are rolling right along on the season. I challenged the Tide with the lack of O in their week three game. When your D is playing stout, you don’t need a crazy offensive performance. Bama’s wins are also solid with KState, THA U, UNC, and let’s not forget about a little ole school in Athens. The Tide showed it can take a smack early and fight through to win when taken to deep waters. The Tide will play five ranked teams to close the season, and they won’t be a cakewalk (Cocks, Vols, Tigers (the Mizzou variety), Tigers (LSU), and the Noles). BIGmike will look to take his second team in as many seasons to the CFP.
Florida – [5-0 and 2-0] UF passed their first tests of the season by taking out rival Miami and surviving at Kyle field against A&M. The road to the CFP doesn’t get easier but the SEC scheduling God’s did this team right by having UF host Tenn, UGA, Texas, and FSU at home down the stretch (that’s right, three of four top 10 teams at home). The Gator O is humming along ranking at the top of the SEC’s major categories (points, total O, rushing, and passing). Their defense has only given up 100 points on the season (20 ppg), but some of that can be attributed to paying Kennesaw and NIU. We learned a great deal about MC through his interview and we’re about to find out a great deal on his team.
South Carolina – [5-0 and 3-0] The Cocks have been the SEC “where did they come from” team on the season. They’ve certainly done more with less than anyone in the conference. Don’t be misled, the team has some talent and is led by RB Raheim Sanders and WR Nyck Harbor. When your QB completes 83.5% of his passes it makes for a hard offense to defend. Speaking of defense, the Cocks D isn’t giving up much on the ground (89 ypg – second in the conference).
Texas - [2-0 and 0-0] The Longhorns certainly could be higher and I anticipate easy wins against UMass and MSU but their early season slate has anything but challenging. Through two games the D is yielding just 6 ppg while scoring at 38 ppg, The schedule is about to get a lot harder with a visit to UGA and another road trip to UF – oddly, that should clear up the SEC’s top three teams give or take. With the early schedule, it’s no shocker the Longhorns are first in every major defensive category. Time will tell for the ‘Horns as they march on with the season.
Georgia – [4-1 and 2-1] The Dawgs lost the heartbreaker to Bama 33-30 on a last-second field goal. Add in the recent scare against Auburn and you suddenly have a coach under duress. For fun UGA gets to play Texas, UF, and Tennessee to close out the season. The Dawgs O is near the top of the major conference statistical categories but that D gives up points and yards and isn’t holding serve with the O. Both pass and run D are 11th in the conference and for the Dawgs to compete for a title and get back to the CFP they’ll need to shore things up. The D is too talented to not be near the top of the conference. Coach Cane has his work cut out for him but if anything we know about this NDLer is he’ll work on his game and come back stronger as a result.
Tennessee- T[5-0 and 1-0] he Vols quietly keep chugging a long. I shouldn’t say quietly as they’re a top-10 team so others have noticed. They’re hit or miss so far – either they’re routing you (two 35-point wins over WVU and Army) or scoring a ton and just getting by. The Vols have a considerably light schedule compared to other top-eight teams with visits to Bama and UF. These games will determine a great deal for all involved. The Vols have one of the more diverse passing attacks with three players with 12-25 catches making them a tough defend.
LSU – [3-1 and 0-1] The Tigers opened the season with a loss to SC but have impressive wins against Michigan State, CMU, and Liberty. Maybe not team heavy but certainly some outstanding coaches. The Tigers should keep rolling for a few weeks before getting to a ranked opponent. They’ll play A&M, Bama, and UF down the line but should hold serve until those games are played. We’ll know more about the Tigers at that juncture. The Tigers are giving it up through the air but being up big teams are going to pass more. The Tigers are the dark horse to make a lot of noise within the conference so don’t sleep on them with the early loss – it’s a long season.
Missouri – [2-1 and 0-0] We’ll know soon if the upset loss to NCSU will affect the team in conference play/. The Tigers conference schedule has them only playing three ranked teams to close the season and all are at home (A&M, Bama, and SC). A favorable schedule will allow them to make a run to play in the conference title game, This team can put up points in bunches as they’re getting 47 ppg. The problem for them is the D also gives up a lot of points giving up 35 or more in each of their games thus far (41 ppg). That’s not a lot of margin for error and curious if the D will hold up against the upcoming conference games.
