A Tale of Points, Defense, and Sanders’ Slingin’
The inaugural Big 12-ACC Football Challenge kicked off with Baylor and Georgia Tech putting on a show that would’ve had every defensive coach in the country sweating through their visors. In a game that featured less tackling and more track-and-field than expected, Baylor edged out Georgia Tech in a wild 55-48 barnburner. Imagine a 7-on-7 scrimmage but with a live crowd, actual uniforms, and way more points on the scoreboard. Baylor’s offense was unstoppable, Georgia Tech’s offense was unstoppable, and, well, both defenses were very stoppable. Coaches are still trying to figure out what happened, but fans got more than their money’s worth in touchdowns, missed tackles, and a flurry of field goals.
Over in a different kind of game, Colorado stifled Florida State 27-7 in a defensive masterclass that the other half of the conference challenge sorely needed. Coach Deion Sanders had his son, Shedeur, spread the love, hitting up eight different receivers like he was auditioning for a quarterback skills camp. Unlike the Baylor-Georgia Tech track meet, this game was a defensive lockdown, with Colorado putting the clamps on Florida State’s offense in a way that would make even NFL teams jealous. Florida State’s offense was so smothered they might as well have been playing on a different field—by halftime, they were mostly just wondering what hit them.
So, with one team winning a shootout and the other winning a shutdown, this challenge is off to a legendary start. Who said college football couldn’t mix in a little bit of basketball flair? Baylor proved that touchdowns come easy when you forget how to tackle, while Colorado and Shedeur Sanders showed how to handle business with lockdown defense and a quarterback slinging the ball like a seasoned point guard. The Big 12 walked away with the early bragging rights, and if this is any sign of what’s to come, college football fans might want to tune in for the next games. . Bring on more points, more laughs, and maybe even a tackle or two.
