Big XII Power Rankings
Article By: Welcome to the first iteration of the Big XII rankings! There are still a few Block 1 and 2 games unplayed so these could possible be shifted around when finished but as of this time here's where we stand.
The Big XII Conference is gearing up for a highly competitive season, showcasing a mix of powerhouse teams and seasoned coaches that promise to make this a tough season.
Each week, the power rankings will reflect the intense rivalries and emerging talent across the conference. Expect to see tight matchups as teams battle for supremacy, making every game crucial for standings.
We'll start at the bottom and work our way to the top.
Arizona State Sun Devils 0-2 (0-1) - A close loss to Northwestern and then a double digit loss to Texas Tech. Still waiting on a UMass game but the next two games after that are going to be rough; Kansas and Utah.
UCF Knights 0-2 (0-0) - I don't think this team will be ranked this low very long. A TD loss to then #11 Tennessee shows they can compete. The problem for them now is a strong TCU team and then Colorado are next.
BYU Cougars - Got one of his rivalry game wins but then dropped back to back games and both by double digits. They'll need to either figure out how to use that defense, which is good, or put up more points if they don't want to fall further down this list.
Houston Cougars 1-2 (0-1) - Should be illegal for there to be two teams with the same mascot in the same league. Let's make this a rivalry and one of you has to change when you lose! The air it out, high scoring Cougars will need to figure out how to stop teams or those impressive numbers the QB puts up this year will mean nothing.
West Virginia Mountaineers 0-2 (0-1) - We have to ignore the 35 point loss to Virginia Tech as that was a different coach. Crazy as it might sound, the fact the new coach was able to come in and ONLY lose by 20 to Kansas makes me think he'll probably do alright in the Big XII.
Arizona Wildcats 1-1 (0-0) - Sitting at .500 on the season with a single score loss and a single score win. We're probably not sure what we have yet in Arizona but should see soon enough with a date vs. #25 Utah coming up next block.
Oklahoma State Cowboys 2-1 (0-1) - A very solid win over Boise State and that cheat code of a RB but a narrow victory over winless Purdue and the loss to Utah drop them down a bit. Don't overlook them though.
Kansas State Wildcats 2-1 (1-0) - Dismantled by 'Bama but c'mon, it's 'Bama. Back to back wins after that show his resiliency though. I'm placing them ahead of Okie State for now due to their conference win vs. Okie's conference loss.
Texas Tech Red Raiders 2-2 (1-0) - Sitting there with 2 losses already but both were by a combined 4 points, tough teams and OOC games. Tech will look to put up a lot of points this season. Defenses had better be prepared.
Cincinnati Bearcats 2-0 (1-0) - I do believe this will be a tough out for anyone and could probably argue, based on the coach alone, that they should be ranked higher but they just don't have the strength of schedule yet to justify that.
Utah Utes 2-0 (1-0) - An 11 point take down of Okie State was a good win for the Utes to start the Big XII gauntlet. Utah avoids Kansas and Baylor in the regular season but there are still plenty of pitfalls for them on the schedule.
Colorado Buffaloes 1-1 (0-1) - Can't drop this guy too far for their loss to Baylor. They're still a real threat and will have vengeance on their mind going into every game now. Good luck UCF.
TCU Horned Frogs 2-0 (0-0) - Some might be surprised to see them listed this high in the rankings but considering their upset over #9 SMU it shouldn't. Next up for them is #1 Kansas. We'll get a better picture of whether they belong here or not real soon.
Iowa State Cyclones 2-0 (0-0) - A huge win in Block 1 over rival Iowa who was ranked #12 got the Cyclones season going in the right direction. Next up for this team in Block 3 is a coach rivalry with Baylor. Get past that game and it would appear to be easy sailing until much later in the season.
Baylor Bears 4-0 (1-0) - A real contender to be the new Big XII champ. A 10 point victory over a very tough Colorado team has elevated what was already considered a big threat to an even higher plain. A juicy matchup with Iowa State in Block 3 could potentially launch him to the #1 spot.
Kansas Jayhawks 4-0 (1-0) - There is some serious competition for this position right now but you can't take it away from him until you prove you belong there. It's business as usual for the Jiggyhawks as they're averaging 43 points while only allowing 15.
