Hurricane Milton rapidly approaching

Hurricane Milton Prep

Coach Carr, in his second NDL season and first with the Troy Trojans, is preparing his team while also weighing the options for evacuation and relief plans amidst the news of Hurricane Milton barreling east from the Gulf of Mexico. Troy University is located in scenic Troy, Alabama but Coach Carr and his team reside in sunny Fort Myers Beach, Florida. With the news of a potentially damaging storm arriving mid week, and having first hand experience with numerous Florida hurricanes, this coach is taking no chances with power outages and would like to schedule any scrimmages or Beefy cup games as soon as available.

University athletic director, Brent Jones, spoke earlier with Team Rubicon leaders who say they have over 300 volunteers ready to deploy across the entire state of Florida by Friday morning. The storm is expected to make landfall somewhere around Fort Myers Beach, where Coach Carr currently resides, sometime Wednesday evening.

"I was in the 5th grade, living in Daytona Beach when Hurricane Charlie ripped across the state. We stayed at home again, less than 3 weeks later when Hurricane Frances approached from the Atlantic and again when Hurricane Jeanne followed the same path just another 3 weeks after Frances. I'm not making a mockery of these things when I say we will not evacuate. I'm moreover saying we CAN'T evacuate. Due to financial reasons and job responsibilities we just do not have the allocated funds to flock with the herd so to speak. While all of our friends and loved ones have taken advice to seek shelter in Northern Florida and even parts of Georgia, we will stand firm in these unprecedented times and I hope to shed light on any concerning civilians watching the news. We understand the potential for large-scale flooding here in Fort Myers Beach but we will ride the storm out in a second story apartment. Please keep your fingers crossed, pray, rub your lucky pennies together, wear your lucky underwear all week, most importantly find peace because humanity is the glue to this University, this state and the planet we share. God speed fellow NDL coaches."

FMB (Fort Myers Beach) was exposed just 2 years ago through Hurricane Ian, Coach Carr said he was thankful to have been residing in Daytona Beach at that time, "..this is an act of mother nature that no sandbags are going to be able to prevent. As far as football is concerned, we have a ton of work to do within the program before our season opener vs Buffalo next week. Our main focus and our main priorities are those of our communities at this time. I'd love to dig deeper on our position battles among the QB, RB and Defensive Line but our immediate concerns, again, are that of the state of Florida and it's residence."

The National Hurricane Center said Milton has maximum sustained winds of 160 mph. It's expected to weaken slightly to a Category 3 storm before making landfall Wednesday night on Florida's west coast, likely in the Tampa Bay area.

"You have time to execute your plan, but you gotta do it now," DeSantis said Monday in Tallahassee. "You have an opportunity today to do what you need to do to execute this plan. You have time today. But do it. Because time is gonna start running out very, very soon." The governor said Monday will be a critical day for residents who need to evacuate as a "flurry" of evacuation orders will be issued over the coming hours for counties along Florida's west coast. The governor said up to 12 feet of storm surge is expected from Southwest Florida north into Tampa Bay. Many Gulf coast communities still have debris in the roads from Hurricane Helene two weeks ago.

5,000 National Guardsmen are now mobilized in Florida to respond to both debris removal and emergency responses, with another 3,000 Guardsmen on the way to the state.
