The expectations in Dallas are sky high and that is potentially the reason SMU has the new coach they do.
NDL legend Steamrllr22 led the SMU Mustangs all the way to the CFP Championship Game and a 15-1 record that included an ACC Championship in SMU's first year in the league.
This created big shoes to fill once Steamrllr22 announced his departure from SMU to the in-state Texas Longhorns. Many contract negotiations were had with several coaches but nothing would be finalized until former Jacksonville State Gamecocks head coach Block M put pen to paper to move to Dallas and lead SMU into their next chapter.
Under Block M last season, Jacksonville State got off to a 1-6 start in S29 before turning things around with a five game winning streak and finishing the year 6-6 to qualify for The Frisco Bowl where they would lose a shootout to the Rice Owls.
Historically, Block M carries a 65.3% season winning percentage after 18 seasons in the NDL. The coach has won four conference championships and holds a 9-5 bowl record.
The track record and the momentum from that turn around in Jacksonville, Alabama in S29 was enough to gain the attention of the SMU AD.
SMU still has to finalize their S30 schedule but the fact remains the expectations in Dallas are large. Also large however, is the momentum the Mustangs carry into S30 and the desire to wash away the loss to the Kansas Jayhawks in the CFP Final. New HC Block M and the SMU Mustangs hope to harness that momentum from last season to contend for another ACC Championship and return to the College Football Playoff in NDL S30. Will it actually happen in an ACC conference that returns many of its top coaches from S29?
Only time will tell.
