Is Liberty The Team To Beat?Conference USA Power Rankings: Midseason
Article By: As Conference USA play heats up, we’re starting to see the contenders separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Here's a look at how the teams are stacking up as we approach the midpoint of the season.
1) Liberty Flames (5-1 overall, 3-0 conference)
Head Coach: Phoneybadge1
The Liberty Flames are setting the pace in Conference USA, boasting an impressive 5-1 overall record. They've been unbeatable at home, standing tall with a 4-0 record in Lynchburg. Coach Phoneybadge1 has his squad firing on all cylinders, particularly in conference play, where they’ve dominated with a perfect 3-0 record. With key wins and a potent offense led by HB Quinton Cooley, the Flames are the team to beat in C-USA.
2) MTSU Blue Raiders (3-2 overall, 1-0 conference)
Head Coach: PacksyD
MTSU’s 3-2 record doesn’t tell the whole story, as they’ve shown resilience in a tough schedule. Coach PacksyD has managed to keep the Blue Raiders competitive despite some early-season hiccups, especially at home where they are 2-2. With a conference win under their belt, they’re poised to challenge Liberty for the top spot as the season progresses.
3) NMSU Aggies (2-4 overall, 2-1 conference)
Head Coach: OldSchoola
The Aggies have been a mixed bag this season. While their 2-4 overall record might look grim, they’ve been solid in conference play with a 2-1 mark. Interestingly, all four of their losses have come at home, which suggests they’ve struggled to protect their turf. Coach OldSchoola will need to tighten things up if NMSU is to make a serious run in the second half.
4) UTEP Miners (3-4 overall, 2-2 conference)
Head Coach: MJKempt15
Under new leadership, UTEP has shown flashes of brilliance, particularly on offense. The Miners lead the conference in average points per game, a testament to Coach MJKempt15’s offensive scheme. However, their defense has been a concern, with points against nearly matching their offensive output. If UTEP can balance out their play, they could be a dark horse in the race for the conference title.
5) Jacksonville State Gamecocks (2-4 overall, 1-1 conference)
Head Coach: BlockM
Jacksonville State has struggled to find consistency, particularly at home where they are winless at 0-3. Coach BlockM has a talented roster, but the Gamecocks need to find a way to close out games if they want to move up the standings. A balanced 1-1 conference record keeps them in the hunt, but they’ll need a strong second half to stay competitive.
6) Sam Houston State Bearkats (1-4 overall, 1-1 conference)
Head Coach: Jamesthecarman
The Bearkats are another team that has struggled at home, failing to notch a win in three attempts. However, their conference play has been more promising, with a 1-1 record that gives them a fighting chance. Coach Jamesthecarman will need to rally his squad to turn things around in the coming weeks.
7) LA Tech Bulldogs (0-3 overall, 0-0 conference)
Head Coach: Jeffmo
LA Tech has had a rough start to the season, but with no conference games under their belt yet, there’s still an opportunity to make some noise in C-USA. Coach Jeffmo will look to reset and focus on the upcoming conference slate to get the Bulldogs back on track. Hopefully soon.
8) Kennesaw State Owls (0-5 overall, 0-1 conference)
Head Coach: SSi7698
Kennesaw State’s record is deceptive, as they’ve faced a brutal schedule with four of their first five games on the road. The Owls haven’t found their footing yet, but there’s potential for improvement as they return home for more of their remaining games. Coach SSi7698 will be eager to get that first win under their belt.
9) FIU Golden Panthers (1-5 overall, 0-2 conference)
Head Coach: SnealShiesty
It’s been a tough season for FIU, who have faced one of the most challenging schedules in the conference. Their opponents have combined for a 25-10 record, making every game an uphill battle. Despite the tough breaks, Coach SnealShiesty has kept the Golden Panthers competitive, and they’ll look to pick up some wins as the schedule eases up.
10) WKU Hilltoppers (0-6 overall, 0-2 conference)
Head Coach: WastedMemory
The Hilltoppers are at the bottom of the standings, struggling mightily to generate offense with only 99 total points scored in six games. Coach WastedMemory has a lot of work ahead to turn this season around, but a few conference wins could provide a spark. WKU needs to find answers quickly to avoid a winless season.
As the second half of the season unfolds, expect plenty of movement in the standings as teams fight for the top spots in Conference USA. The battle for the conference title is far from over, and every game counts as we head into the home stretch.
