The Cal Bears hired a new coach yesterday, who is really an Old Coach from the history of CAL football. This is Coach Gonzales third stint with the Cal Bears, and will be his 5th Season total at the helm. Did we not learn the first 2 stints and 4 seasons.
Last time we saw Coach G in S28 he was finishing a successful 5 year tenor with the Oregon Ducks capping off a
13-1 season and Rose Bowl Victory.
What was thought to be his retirement speech Coach G had this to say after his last game.
"First off it is nice to finally win one of these Rose Bowls, with this team I should of definately done it sooner. It has been a good run here in my NDL career, over the long haul there is definately been more good then bad, and I am thankful of my time here. Unfortunately I was not able to bring Oregon, Nebraska, or Cal a national title, but I tried. It has been nice forming some solid friendships over the years, and I ll look forward to keeping those going pass here, as my NDL career ends here today. It was nice to end it with a win. It has been a blast and I will see you all around."
The Ole Ball Coach had a 3 year stint from S6 to S8 where the Bears were a bit underwhelming going
15 - 21 in that stint, then again in S17 finishing
6-6 which tied his best season with the Cal Bears as it was the third time the best the Bears could do was 500 football under the leadership of Coach G.
So it is strange that the Cal Bears would take another shot on the Coach, with many saying the times have passed him by and this not the Oregon Ducks or Nebraska Cornhuskers. But we guess, with the California joining the
ACC a big change from the
PAC 12, AD Knowlton wanted to bring back something familiar. Luckily Cal Football this season does not have very high expectations as we are not expecting much from Coach G and the Cal Bears.
Coach G, had this to say at his introductory press conference.
"Well after a 10 year retirement its nice to return to a team I have coached for 4 previous seasons, so I have some unfinished business. It will be a process, but we hope to be competitive and provide the fans with an exciting brand of football. Its nice to be back, it has been too long. As I look around the landscape I see a lot of familiar faces, and some new ones too.. I have already been setting up meets with some of those faces. Hopefully this old guy still has some tricks up his sleeve."
The Cal Bears have an expected win goal of 2 this season, before their Out of Conference schedule is locked in. Spring games have already begun, lets hope we here some promising news out of Berkeley, though we wont hold our breath.
