apnews(9-25-2011)The Stanford Cardinal hosted the BCS Championship game today in Palo Alto against BIG 12 champions Michigan State Spartans. The game matched up two 12-1 teams in a game for all the marbles. Both teams came out a bit nervous to start the game. Stanford won the toss and was forced to a 3 and out on their 1st possesion.Stanford punted and michigan state on their 1st play on offense had a 12 yard run for a first down. They would later find out that that would be their only 1st down till the start of the 3rd quarter drive. The cardinal forced the spartans to punt and Stanford put together a nice drive with runs and passes. Andrew Luck found Coby Fleener over the middle for a 18 yard touchdown to open the scoring in the game. Luck said about the play " Toby rana great route and got behind the linebacker "The second quarter started and Michigan state was forced to punt and Stanford had a long run of 60 yards by Stefan Taylor on a 3rd and 1 that got the ball down to the Spartan 15 yard line. Taylor was able to run the ball in on run up the gut to take a 14-0 lead in the game.
The Cardinal would add a field goal to go up 17-0 at halftime and both teams headed into the locker room looking to make some adjustments.Michigan State would come out in the second half and drive down the field with some great passes and runs. They got down to the Stanford 25 yard line and Cousins was pick off by Terrance Brown to kill any hopes of cutting into the Stanford lead.Spartan slot receiver was suppose to slant and he cut outside instead and Brown was right there for the interception.Stanford would drive down the field and Stefan Taylor would punch the ball in for his second touchdown on the day to put the Cardinal up 24-0 late in the third quarter.The fourth quarter started, and Michigan State was driving and was pciked off again by Terrance Brown.Stanford would run the ball and noticed the Spartans bringing guys up to the line to try to control the Cardinal running attack.Luck audibled out of a play and was able to find one on one coverage outside on Owusu and was able to connect for a 29 yard touchdown.
The Cardinal would get the ball late in the 4th and run the ball down the field and take the victory formation with 1:35 left in the game and take three knees and were crowned NDL BCS Champions. Coach Mike said after the game " first off i want to give props to Michigan State on a great season and they should be proud of the season they had this year. I have no idea what to say about the season, im kinda still in shock. We started the season and had no expectations on what was ahead of us. It all started back in Pittsburgh Week 3 and here we are celebrating a national championship. UNREAL. "
GAME NOTES- When Coach Mike was ask what he was going to do after winning the NDL championship, he replied "GOING TO VEGAS!" He was also asked what were his plans for a repeat he replied " who says im going to be here next year" That last quote on his way out of the parking lot had the alumni and the students taking collections for a pay raise.
