Riccio's Random Thoughts Vol. 3

Article By: NCAA Dynasty League

-- I'm starting to look at the big picture of the national title race and i'm going to use todays random thoughts to think aloud... just one man's opinion and obviously alot of stuff can change.

-- If you go undefeated in the SEC, there is no discussion, you're going to make the national title game. But Alabama has 4 very tricky matchups left with LSU, @ Miss St, @ Auburn and an SEC title game. All 4 have the potential to be stumbling blocks... If he wins out he's obviously a lock, but i find it hard to believe that even with that amazing squad, he's going to get thru this gauntlet without a blemish.

-- South Carolina, who also currently has no ranked wins on his resume, does have nice wins over solid teams in Texas A&M and Auburn, but only has a matchup with Mississippi St and to a lesser extent Arkansas to get that season defining win under his belt. While his road til the end of the season isn't as bumpy as BFIVL's, Champ will still need a couple big wins and a SEC title game to get in the BCS national title game.

-- i love Va Tech and think he's probably the best combo of user/team in the league right now, but, i'm not so sure he's deserving of the #2 spot. The ACC is flat out terrible. Pimpin has 2 nice wins over currently unranked WVU and Miami. As of right now, he'll go 12-0 and not have beaten a team ranked in the polls (this could change obviously). He's doing what he's supposed to do and winning games but if multiple teams go unbeaten, its going to be hard to argue he deserves to be ahead of some of them.

-- Stanford, who also (currently) has no ranked wins on his resume, could make a legitimate case for number 2 if he can knock off highly ranked Oregon St and USC (not to mention Oregon). If he runs the table, he'll certainly have a worthy resume to be in the title game.

-- Oregon St finds themselves in the same boat as Stanford. No currently ranked teams on their resume, but a huge matchup with Stanford on the horizon. A win over the Cardinals could boost them into the top 3. If Oregon St is the representative out of the Pac 12 with an unbeaten record, it'll be interesting to see if that 1 win over highly touted Stanford would be enough to jump over a team like Va Tech.

-- Louisville??? To most of the NDL, coach MCX's success may be a surprise, but to those of us in the Big East, we've been tortured by his gameplay for years. Truly a coach that can win against anyone, he has led the Ville to an improbable 5-0 start. Louisville has wins over BCS schools like Cal, Kentucky and Florida on their resume, but neither of those teams has accomplished as much as they were expected to. Louisville also has a matchup with Oregon to go along with tough Big East games against UConn, Pitt, WVU and Cincy. If Oregon has a successful season, WVU, Cincy, and UConn all end up ranked and Louisville is able to run the table, the Cardinals may have the most impressive resume of any team. Its a tall order, and for the record i don't think he does it, but, Louisville could have a legit case to be in the title game over Va Tech and the Pac 12 undefeated rep if he manages to win out.

-- Finally, Kansas St. The Wildcats are on a roll thru 6 games with a nice win coming over Oklahoma. At 3-3, OU's final 6 games will have a huge factor on if this was a huge win or just another W over an overranked team. With games looming against Texas A&M and Iowa St, the Wildcats do have a couple more chances to get quality wins to boost the resume to finish up the stretch. A struggling Ok St, OU and Texas led Big 12 is really going to hurt the Wildcats down the stretch... running the table may not be enough if multiple teams are tied.

-- Assuming everyone runs the table and logical games are won by their opponents, i see my final poll looking like this:

if Stanford beats Oregon St:

1. SEC undefeated winner (Bama/South Carolina)

2. Stanford

3. Louisville (if Stanford loses, i'd have Ville over Oregon St.)

4. Kansas St.

5. Va Tech

If Oregon St beats Stanford:

1. SEC undefeated winner (Bama/South Carolina)

2. Louisville

3. Kansas St

4. Oregon St

5. Va Tech

-- While it looks like i'm poo poo'ng on Va Tech, i'm not. Like i said earlier, i think he's the best owner and best team combo. I just don't think he's had a good enough resume to get him in over the other unbeatens. What he has that others don't have tho is most of his schedule finished... he's got far fewer road blocks ahead of him and by the end he might be the only undefeated team left anyways.

-- My actual prediction on what i think happens is Stanford vs Va Tech in the championship game as everyone else has a hiccup along the way... Oregon being the major x factor in the whole situation.
