Article By: Texas A&M senior Christine Michael was named a candidate for the 2012 Doak Walker Award, which is given annually to the nation's top collegiate running back.
Michael, from Beaumont, Texas, was also on the "watch list" for the Maxwell Award, which is given to college football's Most Outstanding Player. Michael was a three-time honorable mention All-Big 12 selection, and was the conference's top freshman in 2009.
Last season, Michael was well on his way to a 1,000-yard season before suffering a knee injury in game nine against Oklahoma. Michael rushed for 899 yards and eight touchdowns on 149 carries in the abbreviated season, including a career-high 230 yards and three touchdowns against Arkansas.
For his A&M career, Michael has nine 100-yard rushing games, and has gained 2,374 yards on 441 carries with 22 touchdowns. In addition, he owns the longest running play in school history, a 97-yard touchdown romp against Baylor in 2009.
In other Aggie football news, four Texas A&M players were named to the 2012 Pre-Season Media Days All-Southeastern Conference team, by vote of the media at the SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala.
Making the first team were junior offensive tackle Luke Joeckel and senior linebacker Sean Porter, while senior wide receiver Ryan Swope was named to the second team and senior center Patrick Lewis earned third-team honors. The media also predicted the order of finish for the East and West Divisions with the Aggies placing fifth in the rugged Eastern Division. The media vote had Georgia winning the East and LSU taking the West, the Tigers emerging as the SEC Champions.
